I remember getting this as bundled software with a video card and playing it to death. It was so much fun.

I really hope the new game turns out great. The trailer got me all giddy. Can't wait.

Except that CoD4 > all of the past CoD's and W@W. W@W was total trash imo.

Oh, no doubt the game is going to be awesome, but it isn't going to matter. There's going to be too much Wharrrgbl from various groups

The pen and paper BT purists that will likely bitch that mech loadout isn't -exactly- like pen and paper design, or will quibble about the difference in rate of fire or something else.

The Macross purists will bitch about the Unseen models being back again, (The original about 12 or so mech designs in pen and paper battletech were completely ripped off of Macross/Robotech and Dougram)

The Clan cheesers will bitch that there's no Clan equipment for them to cheese everybody with.

And of course somebody's going to bitch because the game company putting out the game put out the god awful transformers 2 game.

In mercs i had an awesome(80 ton mech) with something around 14-18 Medium Pulse lasers(clan) all in one group with a TON of heat sinks. That's all this mech was... lasers and heat sinks. I was actually able to fire all lasers at once and hold them down for as long as i wanted w/o heat build up. I was able to tear up ANY mech in a matter of 5 seconds, including atlases and what not. It was AMAZING and i was NEVER able to get the right config again to allow for it i tried so many times to do it again but i'd always end up blowing myself up ;/

lasers are for noobs, like you. And you know what noobs get? AC50 cannon shots in the head.

Actually, no, AC newbs got Gauss to the face, or RAC2x6 to the face if playing MW4:Mercs

In all seriousness, I find myself missing this nice little java simulator of actual pen and paper battletech. It's called Megamek. my favorite mechs were always either the Mad Dog C (A vulture variant that packed 2 Clan Gauss) Or the Mad Dog Prime. Yeah, the armor was pathetic, but when you can outmaneuver a mad cat and keep his Target numbers pathetically high, while you can plink him with pulse lasers, you don't really need good armor.

Or it would if I weren't a billy-no-mates with no friends to play Multiplayer with.

Mechwarrior 4 any good? I never tried it out and apparently it's being made free as part of the reboot/new game announcement.

You say that so smugly because mw4:mercs removed cluster bomb cannons.

I don't know if you played mercs extensively, but getting hit by, say, ultra20 in the torso messes up your aim for a good 3-4 seconds, depending on your tonnage.

It's a huge advantage and lets you get up close for the lbx20 kill.

The problem was always getting in close enough for the ultra20 to hit. A guass shot isn't gonna take down a 50 tonner with a few shots, and lasers need sustained fire to kill, which won't happen. The only way is to keep at range, and pray they are not a good shot with a long tom.

imho the ac setups are similar to wow's rogue, you stunlock and kill.

I stopped at mech 3 and never played 4 so this will be good. Is there a date when they are dropping it out for a download yet?

Really psyched for this, and glad they're doing a retrofit of the original game instead of a new sequel.

Yes, you have a point, however, Gauss and RAC's have one thing the UAC20 doesn't have, range
gauss long range in tabletop is 23 or 25 hexes. AC20's? 9 hexes. and a lucky 12 on the location roll would mean a headshot.. given that heads cap at 9 armor/3 internal structure, and the guass does 15 damage, that's an instakill.

Now if we're talking MW3? you hit someone in a leg with gauss, I don't care if it's an annihilator or a Dire Wolf(sorry, "Daishi" to Spheroids..) it's eating dirt.. in fact that used to be a common cheese tactic in multiplayer, people loading up on LBX's because there was a bug that each LBX pellet counted the same as a gauss shot when it came to knock down.

On the MW4 point, again, I have to cede that point, if you can get close to me. Yes, in an urban environment or with lots of cover, your AC setup would have an advantage. I, on the other hand, prefer to snipe. That's a lesson you learn in tabletop that applies to MW games, it doesn't matter what the enemy can do to you if you stay out of the range of his weapons.

i've never heard of this tabletop. It sounds like something i'd like to try out.

on another note, a guass gun sounds awesome if you are rolling dice... but actually aiming one while your mech is moving and firing at a moving target with a huge cooldown/reload time, ain't so great. I mean, if your mech is moving at full throttle the cockpit is all shaking and shit.

Plus if you are facing a catapult with a bunch of lam10s or whatever, he can keep sustained fire so your aim is getting knocked around and essentially "plink" you to death.

By tabletop, I mean the original pen and paper Battletech Boardgame.

And again, you have a good point, battletech, being turn based, some things just don't translate well.

See, I grew up playing the boardgame before I ever touched Mechwarrior 2, which I got ahold of after I got out of college. And yeah, you have a point, movement increases your TN (Target Number, the number you have to roll at or above on 2 six-sided dice), making it harder to hit, on the other hand, stand still, and you're a sitting duck. this is why one common tactic was to tie the enemy up with light, fast-moving units and keep your fire support mechs stationary and under cover, say, hiding in woods or behind a hill or some fortifications.

Unfortunately, strategy games don't often translate all the nuances into FPS games, as you go from commanding a whole Lance or company of mechs to commmanding one and hoping your AI lancemates aren't as Pants-on-head retarded as the marine AI in Halo 3.

And with that display of utter geekdom I think I just got my virginity back.

Unfortunately, not in the core game.. it's set in 3015. The clan invasion was in 3050, unless you count Wolf's Dragoons intel mission as part of the invasion.

This means no Timberwolves/Mad Cats, No Dire Wolf/Daishi's, and no Mad Dog/Vulture's, at least in the core game.

No doubt they'll likely release some kind of clan based expansion, or else there'd be far too much nerdrage.

Now, since it's 3015, that also means no pulse lasers, no ultra autocannons and no gauss. That is, unless they find a Star League era cache or Comstar gets involved (both unlikely, given the timeframe and location of the game). Of course, since it's a frachise reboot, they might pull a star trek and have Future Trunks, err Spock, err, Martha Pryde show up and bollocks the whole original timeline.

    Your fucking retarded.

Call of Duty 4 was one of the best shooters of the decade, if not ever. WaW was ok, wasnt great but serviceable.

Also yeah this game makes me wet.

I know all this, by how soon, I meant how long till a clan based game.
    [edit]

I just caught the Pryde line. My heart smiled.

Glad to hear it, I'm an old school Clan player myself, Jade Falcon specifically, hence it geting a Martha Pryde line and not a Phelan Kell/Vlad Ward line.

Still, I learned the game playing old school 3025 rules, so this annoucement warms my heart

On another note, with them being back the Unseens, anybody wanna take bets on if they're bringing in the Phoenix Hawk and whether or not it's going to be an LAM?
