The problem with the blog article, is that the original article actually does state specifically that *overall* mortality was not significantly affected (it was decreased, they just can't prove statistical relevance with so few subjects). In other publications, these authors did body composition analysis, weight and muscle reduction analysis, so on and so forth, at earlier points in the study.
That kinda contradicts what the blogger says in
"Science doesn’t really work that way. Researchers can’t simply ignore the evidence that doesn’t support their hypothesis. That would be the difference between research done to build evidence to support a hypothesis, from science that is objectively studying a hypothesis."
But the authors did not do that, they document and show what the causes of death were and don't appear to hide anything. The blogger then jumps to the conclusion that CR diets may have caused the non aging related deaths so that they deserve to be included. But that falls short when one considers that any individual cause of death, among so few subjects, can't be shown with any statistical significance to be due to CR. In fact, the only thing that the study can show with any statistical significance, is that "age-related" causes of death declined.
The blogger then goes on to suggest that scientists are investigating a worthless correlation. I don't think that's neccessarily the case when we know that calorie restriction results in large changes in gene expression in adipose tissue, and changes in protein modification in enzymes involved in metabolic pathways due to enzymes potentially activated by the CR diet. Another new study apparrently shows that the same enzymes can modify DNA to promote stability. Obviously, there's an important pathway here that could be utilized at some level to promote longevity. Whether that eventually comes about through calorie restriction or some more direct intervention in some metabolic pathway, I don't think anyone can say, but these proteins represent very major potential drug targets.
Now I wouldn't consider going on a calorie-restriction diet myself, I do still think it's an incomplete picture, the blogger does bring up alot of good points about humans not being the same as model animals, (but seriously, primates are the closest thing to humans) and like the authors say, there's no significant effect on overall mortality. But calling this a null result (or better phrased, a negative result) isn't really doing the study justice.
Be 30% less of a fatass = you will be 30% healthier.
I wouldn't go on something like this to add like 2 years to my life. Though maybe it's because I'm in my 20s now, so it doesn't seem that pertinent yet. I also can't really shave any, need to eat a little over 3k a day just to maintain my weight with my fucked up metabolism.
I'm also planning to get on the list for who gets the pills of eternal youth. Can't just be handing those out to all the riff raff!
After 25 my metabolism slowed down so much
Usually I could have eaten whatever I wanted
Really, I should have been eating healthy all along
I'm slim though and I never had troubles with doing physical activity, so my high metabloism masked any issues.
Know what I wish now though?
=
That I had eaten healthier longer
Obviously, now that I'm 28 I have to eat better, exercise now etc
Never had to before but I finally hit the gym lately
Kinda sore after that first workout in a while but it's worth it
Oh man, nothing beats that first day at the slopes after snowboarding though, but this workout was close. I have muscles in my armpits?! wtf?!!
How is this not well-known?
Seriously. I read about this several years ago. It isn't the first time this study has been done. Its been done on rats as well, and they could double the mice's lifespan by doing this.
Whenever I bring this up, the most popular response is "I'd rather eat whatever I want and live 1 year less".
All lie
That's not going to last forever. You're 21 now, but eventually it will catch up to you, maybe when you are 30, maybe when you are 35, maybe later. Eating whatever the hell you want is okay, if "whatever the hell you want" = lean proteins like fish & chicken, nuts, fruits, veggies, some dairy in moderation and whole grains.
If "whatever the hell you want" = lots of chips, fast food, candy, junk, then you're in for a hurting further down the line.
