I know plenty of people who were professionally scalpeled up from a 10 or an 8 to a 0 or 00, it's usually when the initial piercing is too far down on the lobe to traditionally stretch. First piercings, yadda yadda. If you're willing to take care of it, yeah, it can be an awesome idea.

Not really sure that 10g or 8g qualifies as an introduction to "large gauge" piercings.

don't think a majority of people get pierced at 10 or 8. isn't the standard 14? so they've had their piercing long enough to move up 2-3 sizes, and if they're doing that right it's been over the course of a few weeks. that is an introduction.

I know very few piercers who will initial with a 14g, the standard is 12g or 10g. There's also a very small difference, when it comes to stretching, moving from 12 > 10 > 8. 8 to 6 is the first real jump, if you can't make that then it's usually time to reassess.

Edit: Clarification. 14 or smaller on ears, obviously you don't pierce something like a nostril with an 8g off the break unless you're dealing with someone who has experience with something like that.
