So, instead of mindlessly killing things and hoping the right items pop up, you can buy elixirs (or hi-elixirs, or megaelixirs, or dusty elixirs, depending on difficulty), which you can then trade to the store for the items you want

Haha, I wish. You'll still need to move in and fight for medals and elixirs. Fortunately, the drop rate on elixirs isn't too bad, especially if you have a thief card or three. So, instead of fighting for hours for rare drop items, you can spend less than an hour farming the medals and getting the elixirs to buy the rare drop items.
