Your fault ofc
This is just a well-disguised "it's my 12.95 a month so FYIAD" canned and packaged. The player who knows his shit and plays well is not a dick for expecting a certain standard of skill from the people he plays with, just like he's got every right to be pissed off when he's carrying the group he's in on his back.
Don't pull that "it's a game" card as if to defend the sanctity of voluntary incompetence. Sure there are such things as casual gamers but they stop being casual after playing for several years and 75ing multiple jobs. There comes a critical point which you come to, if you still suck, you have your head up your ass and you should probably feel a little bad about it.
This is a fact, I even originally decided on playing THF because I read Alla before I bought FFXI/while it shipped. Like's been stated before, there are a lot of nice, knowledgeable people who post on Alla, or at least started out with it as their 'main' stomping grounds. There's a lot of crap to cover up the good info, but for people starting out in FFXI, it's a very decent forum. Once you graduate from wondering if H.Harpe/HN is a good idea to being unable to decide if you should use Homam Cosciales or Skadi legs with specific daggers, Alla's not really for you anymore.
The problem with Alla is, imho, that a huge part of their crowd is filled with underachievers with a victim complex.
Swift belt is really hard to get, and you shouldn't knock people for not having it. They're not 'lazy', they just have a life. They're not 'gimp', go back to BG you elitist. Dare try to suggest that Swift isn't the endgoal, but Speed should be? Elitist!
While the jocks ostracizing nerds analogy works, it sorta works the other way around. People trying their hardest to do great on tests, who get contempt from people who're happy being mediocre, and think everyone should be. They look down on third party tools to optimize performance (man, it took a frigging long time before you could talk about windower/windower macro's without being crucified), 'excessive' gearswapping, it's just a game dude...
Oh, and I don't really get this 'different concepts of fun' idea. Yeah one person might love to solo things, or talk in whitegate, fish, craft signed stuff for their friends or even help newbies with missions. That's normal, but that doesn't excuse from retarded behaviour in team-based events. Why should you tolerate an Osode WAR who likes to use greatsword in your Dynamis shell? Listen to people who know what they're doing (you don't have to be math-savvy to listen to well-meant advice), adapt or get out. There's no reason to blow them off for your own 'fun'. Everyone in a Dynamis or Limbus or whatever shell has the same goal: coins/payout/gear. If you constantly and consciously underperform for 'fun', you deserve some of the disrespect heading your way.
I've been on these boards for a significantly long time, much longer than the majority of the people who have posted thus far so maybe I have a different perspective of these boards in general. The reason I, and I believe most people came to these boards originally was because it's always been a fantastic place to get information about endgame, even if you weren't participating, it was a great place to watch others accomplish amazing feats for their time. Throughout the years some of the best information has been posted here, many of the first kills for mobs were posted here and that continues with PW/AV zerg/wall trick etc.
While you do get a certain amount of people being elitist jerks it's because for those who have been around for 4-5 years, we see the same 3-5 topics come up, we see people not use the search function etc. People don't want to search for information anymore, they want to create a new topic, get spoon fed the information and do no real work/research. The same applies to Alla, but the difference is you're either going to get the info here, get referenced where to find the info and possibly told to fuck off, whereas in Alla, you're probably going to get the wrong info.
For the most part I don't think there's an expectation for people to have the perfect gear or perfect macros here, I think there's really only a handful of people who have that anyway. I think the goal is at least try to maximize your potential and to utilize things correctly. If you go to the post pictures of your gear selection, I see less bitching and more recommendations or help than any other place in any other forum on FFXI.
alla is cool when you type loldrg it change to i'm a moron
This is so true. The What's Better and Randomest Question thread provide the best information in regards to gear and gameplay. There's no need for specific forums when these two threads are in existence. The best part is that you can ask old questions and receive updated answers. That leads me to this question:
What's worse: Necrobump or Asking an old question? People suggest using the search feature, but much like Alla's threads, isn't it possible that old information is outdated? As new information and gear comes about, isn't it slightly possible that what was once considered "Optimal" gear is no longer optimal? In such a case, doesn't that mean we *need* to update old information? How can that happen if asking old questions and necrobumping are not permitted?
BG responds to this dichotomy through the What's better and the Randomest question thread. Alla doesn't have such threads because they intentionally break down forums and make them less general. One system allows for such questions without enraging posters by performing one of those two actions. The other system (Alla) does not have this capability. Thus, forum design on BG is superior to Alla in terms of controlling the environment.
It's also called Absolutely Hypocritical.
God, the What's Better? and Random Question threads were such a good idea, I wonder who thought those up. He must be really smart, have a four-letter name, and some pimp Meteor Resist Builds.
Got a feeling his name begins with R, has a C as the third letter, an O as the second, and ends in L.
Sooo.....
I'm suggesting that everybody just get along, and try not to get so bent out of shape about the way people enjoy a videogame. I'm imploring people to take other peoples' perspectives into consideration, and respect each others' differences.
Yet somehow I'm a hypocrite, because that's no different than calling people Allatards or BG Elitists?
That is some flawless fucking logic right there. Maybe you're posting on the wrong boards, holmes.
(See what I did there?)
When we tell others how to play (And thus "act"), it's a problem. When you tell others how to play (And act towards each other), it's not a problem. See what I did there?
Oh right I forgot you were trying to make people respect each other:Yet somehow I'm a hypocrite, because that's no different than calling people Allatards or BG Elitists?
Name calling and condescending remarks. It's obviously perfectly fine for you to do. Yet, when BG and Alla name call each other it's a problem. Yet, when BG makes condescending remarks about Alla, it's a problem. Again, Absolutely Hypocritical.
It's actually remarkable how terrifically you've missed my point. Almost as if you set out to do it. The entire point of everything I have said is that one group of dorks is no better than the other, they're just variations of the same thing. The Alla kids do it their way, the BG kids do it their way, and by default each has its pros and cons (I didn't say this, although it should be implied for anyone who has the ability to think logically).
You're fucking butthurt because something I said rubbed you the wrong way (I'm guessing it was the dork thing, but it could have been the elitist thing), and you're just snipping my sentences to try to take what I'm saying out of context. I'm advising people who have the same hobby as me to be adults and respect each other, and you're equating that to flaming people for wearing the wrong gear. True, I used some bad words to get my point across. I'll make sure to bring that up next time I go to confession. Don't worry, God will forgive me.
You're making an asinine, baseless comparison for the sake of argument. You're wrong, you're butthurt, and now you're just flaming. I think the grownups got what I was trying to say. Maybe they'll explain it to you when you're older.
I honestly cannot believe how dense you are. I said you're hypocritical. I never made *any* suggestions about the point you're trying to make. It's quite clear what the point was considering that you stated it in one brief sentence. However, that does not mean you're not a hypocrite. Your suggestion is that people should learn to respect each other. Yet, at the same time, the manner in which you address everyone is disrespectful. I thought pointing out a few posts in which this was obvious would get my point across, but apparently it didn't.
Your child-v-adult behavior references only consolidate my argument. You refer to yourself as an adult on the basis of respect and "mature" manners. Yet, I don't recall this type of behavior including the use of "fag" to refer to fellow playmates. Moreover, your reference to BG people as "assholes" and Alla people as "fags" is comparable, if not, worse than the use of "BG Elitism" and "Allatard". Your actions are comparable to that of an individual who tells C-words and N-words to respect each other. It's pure hypocrisy. If you want people to stop labeling each other with terrible terms, you can start by applying that ethic to yourself.
Ah, yes. The "What's Better?" thread was truly an amazing idea. Possibly the best one I've seen; I'm actually in awe of what an amazing idea it was. In fact, if there was an award for amazing ideas, you'd win it for every year that the thread has been in existence. And centuries from now, people will still tell the story of the Hume BLM (named Rocl, of course) who conceived what will come to be known as the greatest idea of all time.
You could honestly make whats better its own forum, with sub forums by job, and stickies on the most asked questions... wait that sounds allot like a job forum for BG ;3
and i think Absolutly Virtue is gaining Pchan status in this thread o.o;;
