Office 07 (or a free alternative)

My computer came with a trial version of Office 07, and it has long since run out. I'm starting school up in the fall, and I don't really feel like paying 100 some dollars to use Office, so I figured I'd ask here.

Is there an acceptable, Office 07 compatible free word processor out there, or is there something I can do to keep using office 07?

Side question: my wife has Spanish version of Office, but well, it's in Spanish. Is there any way I can make it display in English?

    I would definitely recommend OpenOffice.

OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite

Aside from OpenOffice there is no other comparable alternative or free(read: legal) way of getting the official Office to continue working.

Just be aware that Open Office can't track changes, which is sometimes a feature that professors require. If they don't, you should be fine with OpenOffice. If not, most schools get big discounts on Office, they used to offer it at my school for like 50 bucks. I'm sure yours has something similar.

There's a compatibility patch that allows you to work with docx in office 2003 if you have those old CDs.

Alot of schools also sometimes distribute royalty licenses depending if the course requires it or not (mine did when I was going to college).

Also, there are alot of free & legal ways to obtain a full working version of 2003/07 office. For example, certain Dells & Lenovos have the option of having a 1 time free Office install.

You just have to look around.

Also check with your school's IT department and see if they offer Office 2007 keys for students.

At my school we get free cd-keys and downloads for wide variety of software (Vista, XP, Office, etc). We are a tech heavy school though, but it doesn't hurt to find out if your school offers something similar or not.

Office 2k7 should cost you $29 at most major universities/community colleges. Go snag it at their technology store on campus.

i personaly use openoffice.... only complaint i have is the file type it saves as. Causes me a lot of hassle when trying to print off documents on another computer without Openoffice. Easly avoidable by just saving 2 copys... one as a openoffice file (for back up) one as a .doc file
