Kind sirs, I have a riddle that need be solved

One summer evening, as I was walking in the fields, I heard somebody behind me calling out my name. I turned round, and saw a friend of mine, at the distance of 400 yards, approaching to join me. We each of us moved 200 yards, with our faces towards the other, in a direct line yet we were still 400 yards asunder. How could this be?

Trying to figure this out, a friend asked me this today. You can move in a straight line and still keep your head turned toward each other, and considering it's a field they can't have seen each other that well. Were they walking parallel to each other?

Just because you were looking at each other, doesn't mean you were walking "toward" each other!.
