but really, it was a boring issue meant to explain the basics. Should have been Blackest Night #0 or something. The fact they killed off the hawks was so stupid. They were dead at the end of the last crossover. Why even bother retconing theme back to life. Oh, DC...

Traditionally yes. For awhile they were a continuity disaster, but they changed it so they were constantly reincarnating throughout history. However in the specific case it was just stupid or reincarnation. They died at the end of Final Crisis, were revealed to be alive in JLA(in a coma), then killed off in the first chapter of the next crossover(now.)
