I'm not sure what upsets me most: Peggy leaving SCDP or Joan literally becoming a prostitute. The whole episode left me groaning and revolted, but it was a good episode. When did Pete become such a card carrying villain? I mean, he's never been the most morally upright dude, but he's really just become a vile human being. I wonder if they're going to explore the whole idea that he's essentially trying to emulate what he thinks Don is. He was just so nonchalant about it all. And good for Don (kinda) for being outraged, but, ugh, Don, he still can't figure out his wife even a little. I felt so bad for Megan when she went into her audition and they just wanted to see what she looked like.
It was a pretty shocking episode, but excellent. It's done episodes about the objectification of women before, but never quite like this. Just watching it made me feel dirty. I can't believe only Don had the fortitude to object considering that Roger (supposedly) has these deep feelings for Joan and Lane has feelings for her too. I guess I'm glad that Lane convinced her to take a stake in the business, but, ugh, everything about it is awful. Like, this extends the whole idea of Joan as this really strong, independent 60's woman (who's now a partner in the firm!), which is amazing, but... She had to be a fucking prostitute to get it!
And Don, the "Good One", was just as guilty as the rest of them since he refused to take any action (other than removing himself of the responsibility of it) until it was too late.
Even Peggy was kind of on display this episode. Is Ted Chaugh really interested in her talent, or is the novelty of a woman writing? Is it to get under Don's skin? I'd have to re-watch the scene to nail the way it all unfolded, but there was just something felt so sinister about it. Maybe it was just the idea that Peggy is leaving. It was so good to see her create magic on the spot and I really want her to be buddies with Ken Cosgrove. It was sad. I can't imagine she'll be out of the show, but still! I've always felt like she's the most important character. I know that it's been a long time since we've had to learn about this world through her eyes, but she is arguably the most important character you have. She's the anchor. As interesting as Don, Joan, and the others are, who the fuck can identify or relate to them? At this point in the series it feels like things are out of control and maybe removing our safety is just going to add to that feeling. I have no idea.
