Yeah I really have always wondered how such random things break too. But then I'm not a programmer and don't know anything about the structure of programming an MMO.

But yeah it doesn't seem to make any sense at all that you can go and fiddle with everything that's not a WS and then break a WS.

And then one of them pressed it during a coffee break and it turns out it was the "Break Cata" button. Clearly that's how it went down.

Well you do have to fight a self aware version of the the relic for the final stage, so at very least the weapons should have some level of subliminal influence on their welder.

Like soul calibur basically.

You can't trap a soul inside a weapon without it all going wrong.

In Arthars' case, he seems to have formed some kind of comedy double act with his apoc (and that's more wrong than Astaroth in a thong)

I bet claustrum, ragnarok, and guttler have probably been broken for years but nobody cares or could tell the difference.
