Well, in fairness, NFL Offseason seems so to stretch from the day the NFL is over until the day the NFL starts back up thanks to a couple fucktards who like being in the news. The NBA, on the other hand, after so long has a relatively quiet offseason unless you count the loldunk on LeBron or something. I don't follow the NHL closely so I don't know or give a fuck.

NHL thread had daily activity at almost all times. While the amount of people we had posting in it was certainly less than the NBA and NFL threads, there was still relevant content being discussed. The NHL offseason is just as important as the regular season. We have multiple big name free agents moving to other teams and several players leaving the NHL to play in Russia etc. The thread wasn't closed due to lack of activity. While I understand Tyche's reasoning to lock the threads, it's a bit of a mystery as to why the NFL offseason thread is spared and two other sports in their respective offseasons weren't. But I'm not a mod.

The NFL season ended before NBA and NHL seasons. I bet the solution will be to lock the NFL thread, instead of just unlocking the other two threads.

By the guy's own admission, he wouldn't have noticed if Brill didn't make a spam post. If I locked the NFL thread right now, do you know how many PMs I'd have in the next hour? The NFL offseason thread (even pre-Big Ben allegations) was longer than both the NBA and NHL threads (full season + playoffs). Here's what I posted in the mod forums...

K, so I've closed the NHL and the NBA threads. We're in a part of the year where the NBA and NHL have just ended, NFL is about to start, and MLB is currently going on. I cut off the two that have just ended to keep the sports chatter to a minimum and keep 5 sports threads off the front page (had one for MMA, MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL). I offed the lesser two. Since doing that, like, a week ago, I've only had two complaints. But I have had two complaints, so I ask the mods if I should reopen them for discussion. Both are saying that it's unfair that the NFL got there own offseason thread (that one thread is longer than the entire full season of NBA and NHL threads), but the other sports only get 1 thread. Here's an exchange I had with the first person who complained about the NHL thread being closed.

Actually, I took great part in the NBA thread. Go back to back when the playoffs were going on. As far as the UFC thread, I've actually thought about changing that thread into a general "UFC 2009" thread. It's not that I simply close the threads that don't interest me...I've posted very little in the UFC thread, and a whole bunch in the NBA thread. I agree with you on the UFC thread, I need to do something, I just don't know how I want to handle those threads yet. It's not your typical sport/schedule.

As far as NBA/NHL/Other sports vs NFL, here's the deal...The plan was to close threads after the seasons were over. The reason for that...There were too many people complaing about too many sports threads. The NFL is handled a little different than the other sports. The NFL threads generate mass appeal. Each week reaches over 20 pages, then playoffs, the superbowl, then offseason. Together, in a season, a single NFL thread would reach 400+ pages. As per Sonamaa (we worked this out back when we started modding the sports threads), I'll be closing the NFL threads weekly (one thread per week) where no further discussion will take place during the season for that particular week, that way we won't have 3 NFL threads on the front page. This includes the offseason thread which will be closed at the start of (pre)season. Other than fantasy sports/oddball-news accounts, etc, only one thread per sport is supposed to be made...with exception to the NFL. As I said, I'm still trying to figure out how to handle MMA. We discussed all of this at length in a public forum back when a lot of people were complaining about the amount of sports threads. I really don't know how to find that thread however, I tried to look for it for you.

I know it sounds like I'm playing favorites with the NFL, and I may be, but that's because it's a forum favorite. If I were to close the NFL thread right now, I'd have 50 PMs in the next 6 hours complaining. I've had one (your's) for the NHL/NBA, and it came, what, a full week after I locked it? Did you just not notice it? That's the difference between those sports. Unfortunately, all sports aren't created equal. My favorite sports (college football and college basketball) will get the same treatment as the NBA/NHL/MLB threads.

Actually, with your explanation, I understand wholly why it happened. Without looking too much into the NFL thread because I'm a casual watcher at most, I didn't realize how much it was posted in. It makes sense to keep it open from your standpoint due to how many people would maybe bitch about it compared to my one PM about why it wasn't. As far as why it took so long for me to PM about it, I read spam like once a week and saw Brill's joke thread calling you out and without you really saying why it happened, like I said I was just genuinely curious, I wasn't criticizing how you moderated. I didn't even notice the NFL thread was still active until today either, but yeah.

Without mass appeal for the sport I can understand from a forum moderator/administrator's perspective why a thread would need locked when it's just a handful of people posting a lot. And really, at this point in the offseason not much happens that we would really need to discuss amongst each other about in the thread, so it's no big loss.

Personally I think the clutter argument is terrible, the sports threads are of far higher quality than most of the other general threads (BG legal, BG medical, BG relationship advice, and BG random news). I don't really mind having them locked because I do have other places to talk hockey, but hearing some fans from other teams weigh in on issues is nice, since 90% of fans that post on other forums are trolls or mouthbreathers, and Sepukku is the only crazy person I can think of here.
