Been smoking since I was 13 stealing newports from my dad. I quit at 15 and started back up at 17. I smoke a hell of a lot less, but now that my favorite brand (Camel Signature Mellow) is discontinued, I'm thinking about quitting if I can stop lighting up when I drink.

Try Targard filters: TarGard They actually show you how much tar would be going into your lungs and may motivate you to quit. I've seen people buy a pack of filters and quit after the first pack. Just remember you have to find something else to do with your hands when you would normally smoke like after dinner, waiting for a bus, or drinking.

I'm going to attempt going cold turkey starting tomorrow morning, but may wind up making an appointment with my doctor to see if that chantrix(?) stuff works.

Anyway, point of thread is to share your successes/failures with quitting smoking. Also general advice is welcome.

I quit cold turkey almost a year ago after smoking pretty steady for 8 years or so. I had just got a new apartment and refused to smoke inside so when winter rolled around it was pretty easy to quit. It gets really fucking cold here and freezing my ass off when it's less than 0 outside isn't worth it.

    Smoking is habitual,

So break the habit one at the time.

For example, most people smoke when they drive, after eating, waking up, taking a shower, after watching a movie , during a recess in the raid. etc

1st stop smoking in the car.
    2nd stop after waking up
    3rd after eating

this will pile up and you'll have a much easier time just quitting.

I quit smoking about 3 years ago. The only thing I had to remember when I had a craving is that I didn't have to resist forever. I just had to resist this one time.

Then the next time I had a craving, I just had to resist that one time.

After about 3 months of resisting that one time I really didn't get cravings so often anymore. After that it was easy.

I also just recently stopped biting my nails after almost 30 years of being a nail biter. Bought that shit that tasted bad (doesn't really taste bad, just makes you aware you are biting your nails, but I wouldn't recommend eating chicken wings with it on........ yea that sucked). It freaking worked so well. Stopped wearing that stuff after three weeks. Been two months and haven't bit my nails once so far.

    Quitting is for losers.

I love cigarettes and I love smoke and I love how it smells and it keeps me thin. ^ - ^

Don't really have actual advice other than an anecdote to share:

My grandmother has smoked for 40 years, and was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last year. Only reason why they found it was because she was exhibiting signs of pneumonia, and she went to go get that looked at. Doctor literally said: "No wonder you feel sick, you have cancer!"

Fast forward to a month ago. My grandmother went through chemo and it was successful in putting her cancer in complete remission. However, she never did quit smoking, and still goes out onto the porch for the occasional smoke. Next thing we know, her overactive dogs decide they want to ambush her while she's standing on the steps just outside the door, and she takes a fall. Broke her hip, arm and leg. The cigarette was completely unharmed. In fact, according to my mom, my grandmother did her best to protect the cigarette over herself as she was falling, which contributed towards her injuries. Now, because of the combination of smoking and chemo, it is unlikely she will ever fully heal - doctors have already determined that she'll never regain the use of her arm, and are still looking at her leg to see if physical therapy can bring it back.

If you're not going to quit smoking because its bad for you, at least quit smoking because of the control factor it has over you. Keep that reasoning dear to you while you attempt to quit. That's all I got to offer.

My boyfriend quit smoking, and he was the most reluctant person to ever quit smoking. He still says he misses it. He went on the patch and it worked like a charm for him.

He was pretty moody for the first few days just because he was so used to going outside and having a smoke and he just didn't know what to do with himself, but he had no choice really but to quit since the government made it so expensive.

I don't have a lot of advice for you, except don't get discouraged. I've never gone through it myself but I've been there for those who have, and it's gonna suck. If you've got a good friend or girlfriend or someone to be there for you, that will help. Having some support will be really important, and I would probably hang around the non smoking friends you have and avoid the smoking ones.

This is a good idea. I hate when I'm in the park or something sitting down or relaxing, and then some rude stupid fuck comes up and starts smoking near me. I mean, seriously.

Personally, I can't stand when people who aren't allowed to smoke inside smoke right by the door. Really? You can't move ten yards away or something? If I didn't want to sit next to your secondhand smoke, I certainly don't want to walk through it on my way in or out of a place. That's always bugged that crap out of me.

This is going to turn into the exact same thread as the Obama one, so let me help.

I hate when stupid people bitch about my second hand smoke getting in their face. They should just eat at home where they know there will not be any.

Edit: Also, I blow my smoke out of the window of my truck, directly into the windows of other cars. Especially cars with children. Raise your kids better, keep their windows rolled up.

I smoked for about 3 years, then quit cold turkey about 3 months ago, The first 4 days were fucking hell, but once I got past that it wasn't so bad. The thing I miss the most about it is being 20 pounds lighter.........

Them cancer cells be hungry, amirite?

Honestly, never smoked myself, but as far as places people smoke that annoy me, it's gotta be at college. No smoking signs right outside the fucking class doors, yet people smoke right outside and fumigate the rooms nearby when I'm trying to learn.

Oh, and rolling the window's up doesn't help for all cars to stop smoke. I keep mine all rolled up and the smell still gets in. Shit's invasive as hell.

I quit smoking about 1 and a half years ago. It was pretty tough, I felt pretty bad the first couple days and then the withdrawal starts to ease. I really didn't know what to do with myself and that drove me crazy. The urges to smoke while driving, after eating, chain smoking while playing MMOs <_<; etc. After a while you just adjust, just remember, you used to live just fine without smoking before. When you those really bad urges just close your eyes and take a couple deep breaths to just relax for a couple seconds and it will pass. I used to get this crappy desperation feeling, like there was just no light at the end of the tunnel so to speak, just remember that shitty feeling goes away eventually. It will be longer after physical withdrawal goes away until you feel normal again in situations where you always smoked. Its just as big a mental addiction as it is physical.

I'm a firm believer of just quitting cold turkey. Don't let yourself "Just have one". Not after you eat, not after you have sex, notta zip zilch. Every time you smoke you are starting with withdrawal all over again. Its kind of ironic this subject came up as well because my grandma was diagnosed with cancer recently <sad>. I really hate cigarettes so much now, I can't believe I ever used to smoke. And I loved smoking, it was a part of who I was. Loved the taste and the feeling, its amazing how your views change on it when you are not addicted anymore. If it were up to me, I'd make them illegal. The me a couple years ago would probably get self righteous and want to whoop my own ass for even suggesting that, but I would. Anyways good luck, you will probably need it, most people attempt numerous times before being successful.

Quitting now myself... i did it slowly, rationed my smokes daily and every couple weeks i'd cut back my daily ration by one. Been at 1/day for a bit & decided one day that the pack i had 2 cigarettes left in was my last, ever and i bought the gum for those times when the craving gets nasty. I've been pretty successful so far, but it helps that the gum is disgusting ... idc if it is mint flavored that shit burns your gums & tastes terrible. It's helping me quit just because i dont want to have to chew that gum anymore.

Chantrix hurts your stomach if you're like me and dont eat breakfast usually. It's very uncomfortable and didn't seem to help me much on my 10034423423th time trying to quit.

Hope you keep tryin. I'm about to be on the wagon too, because I'm smoking 2 packs a day at 8 bucks a pack and have the lung capacity of a toddler now after what, 10-12 years smoking.

Good luck to us both, brb, smoke.
