Yea you pretty much need to eat a light/medium sized meal before taking Chantix, and you should take it with a big glass of water as well, to cut down on the side effects. The nausea usually goes away rather quickly (maybe an hour after taking it, at the most?) if you've eaten before your dose, however, and the medicine takes about a week before it starts really working.
It's possible to have really bad stomach upset/nausea from the medicine to the point that you're vomiting a lot, never happened to me but I know someone who couldn't continue taking it because of that. The only other side effect I had was vivid dreams, like really insane/involved/detailed, I guess I lucked out but yeah.
I can tell you now with absolute certainty that there's no way I would have been able to quit without it, having tried numerous other options in the past to no avail. On the other hand I made significant lifestyle changes within the first week or 2 of taking Chantix to avoid putting myself in the kinds of situations that would make me want to smoke, but I think that only added to something that was already pretty effective.
