    Insomnia

    I can't sleep. Does anyone have a suggestion for non habbit forming OTC type of stuff?

    I took nyquil and it let me pass out for about an hour and I'm up again. Beer doesn't work either because I'm practically immune at this point because I drink it so much.

    I'm going on day 3 without more than a few odd hour long "naps". See a doctor? Can they even do anything other than a damn pill that I'd end up getting addicted to?

    Saw something on TV that might help you. Assign yourself 6 hours to spend in your bedroom. Those are the only 6 hours a day you can spend in your bedroom each day. You must stay in your bedroom for those 6 hours. To start with you still wont sleep with but you kind of train your body to wind down while you're in the bedroom and eventually you will start to associate your bedroom with relaxation and sleep. The guy who was featured on TV had been a severe insomniac for more than 3 years and it was literally tearing him apart and all the therapist did was tell him to spend only 6 hours a day in his bedroom, no drugs, sleep aids or anything. After about a week he was getting solid sleep every night.

    I work nights and I crank one out before sleep each morning (I sleep in the day)

    most likely it's stress related so a doctor is likely to be in your near future

    Thanks for the advice, both of you. I'll try it. I'll move my playstation in the bedroom and maybe lay down and beastmaster for 6 hours laying down. Maybe I'll fall asleep.

    I'm losing my mind, more than I already have, without sleep.

    Tried whiskey?

    Get more exercise during the day (not right before bed), drink more water, fap, don't eat within 4 hours of sleeping.

    im actually having the same problem, even after work and all.

    i want to know why this is happening in the 1st place. idk if its stress with the relationship troubles, etc. all i know is i dont wanna turn out like norton did in Fight Club.

    im going the 96 hour mark in about 2 hours. ive tried running outside/playing the ps3 and reading a book called the Fountainhead. nothing.

    i will try what Jodwahh said though. the problem is i probably spend more than 6 hours in my room if im not going out to work or just out hanging out in general (which isnt much on weekdays)

    I have problems getting a good night sleep most of the time. Lately I can't seem to go to sleep before 3am, and sometimes even 6am. Usually it's due to having so many things going through my mind like what I have/want to do. So ya I would agree it's probably stress related.

    Usually helps me to try reading a book while in bed. It helps clear my mind of everything and when that happens I fall asleep pretty quick.

    Don't use your bed for anything other than sleep and sex. If you can manage it, don't use your bedroom for anything other than sleep, sex, and dressing/undressing. I'm not sure of your living arrangements, but we program ourselves to behave a certain way based on our environment, and if you play video games, surf the web, read, watch TV, etc. etc. all from your bed, you're telling your mind that you should be awake and alert when in bed.

    Also, no video games or hard-thinking projects an hour before bed. I know that for me (as it is with most people), things that encourage critical thinking or amounts of dexterity/hand-eye coordination will work your brain up, making it harder to relax. Along that vein, don't shower right before bed if you can help it. Increasing body temperature makes it harder for the body to fall asleep. Keep your bedroom a little cooler, darker, and quieter than the rest of your living area if you can. The body responds to being curled up under covers and things like that... sort of like setting up to hibernate.

    Try also to establish a pattern. Similar to the 6-hour rule stated above, pick a bed time, go to bed. Pick a time to get up, and get up. Don't take random naps during the day if you don't have to, or, if you can, take a nap at the same time for the same duration.

    Routine is key, and so is establishing your bed and bedroom as the place where the body and mind go to relax and unwind.

    i never thought id find a solution to a minor medical problem on BG but you guys helped tremendously. ive had approx 10 hours of sleep today. i did exactly what the posters above me said to do. i only spent the last 6 hours in my room studying for my MCSE, and before i knew it my eyelids got so heavy and i passed out on my bed with all my clothes still on. i didnt care, it was the best sleep i ever had in my life.

    thanks you guys! if you lived in FL, i'd buy you a beer or something (or a blizzard from DQ ,if you dont drink. those things are more addicting than sex)

    for those still having issues sleeping, I found it best for me to have the bedroom be a little on the chilled-side. having AC/fans if needed during summer. I personally cannot fall asleep if its warm or hot.

    it maybe opposite for others too.

    i take melatonin pills to help me sleep every night. try it.

    can get them at walmart.

    I started with insomnia a few years ago when i was 14, on boxing day which was pretty shit.

    I ended up getting prescribbed sleeping tablets from my doctor. There wernt to many questions asked really, seems a fair few people get it so i would reccommend a doctor really.

    I keep my room cool to cold and just curl up under the blankets. Helps me get to sleep sometimes once the sheets warm up from being freezing cold.

    Stay away from computers and tv's basically any electric device with a screen on it that you would be looking at as this causes your body to not create melatonin which will cause you to constantly stay up and ruin your bodies natural sleep cycle.(older people have less melatonin as well this is why they usually only sleep for around 4-5hrs if not less)

    Basically avoid screens/excercise/social gatherings anything that stimulates your brain activity for an hr or so before u sleep and then relax in bed and you should be fine and if that doesn't work right away start reading a boring book.

    Opposite for me, the more I just sit and play video games, the more tired I become. If im not tired I can lay in bed, turn on my PSP and fall asleep pretty shortly after. Im on my PC constantly and I maintain a perfect sleep cycle too.
