Situational. Obviously, I'm not using Cura if I'm in a situation where I need to keep stoneskin up. These days, I don't use it too much, as there's not much that can kill me if my HP is topped off. So I'd turn to Curaga II-IV to handle my healing needs. With enough -enmity, this makes the best use of my mp.

esuna is only usefull in some situation where you want to be in, soulflyers for example is such a situation, or the dvergr in the assault to remove m.def down, macc down and m.attk down. However yagrush will beat esuna. just by the fact that you dont need to be near anything and can do the same like with esuna but you can stay on solace for stoneskin healing! Not to mention the gamebreaking fact of healing a whole alliance of status ailments in 3 casts! off course for some situations esuna still works better, but I think every whm that manages to get a yagrush really knows which situations call out for this!
While that is technically true, I've found it easier to just get used to standing in close. Can't cast while moving, so moving in and out a lot is detrimental; due to lag, I need to wait a second after stopping, to be sure a cast won't be interrupted. I found it a hassle to keep running in to cast auspice, barspells, etc.

Really, I can no longer see much of a negative in staying in. The argument of "extra healing" is moot, since cura and curaga heal me up as well.

But it's really up to personal preference, whether someone wants to spend 90 mil to get a bit of extra benefit on 2 spells in a few situations. For me, the extra MP and time spent with yagrush means it has too much of a negative, and leads me to conclude that money is best spent elsewhere.

Staying in range pisses off Bards. Just ask everyone who's played as my BRD. And yes, I realize there is Pianissimo. I'm being a smartass.

Yeah, definitely don't want to piss off the brd. They'll make you kick the pimp'ed apoc drk because they don't like them, and make you invite their gimp blu friend.

And yes, this was a smartass comment, too.

Though there's more to positioning than that. These spells like Esuna have a 10' range. You don't need to stand on the melee, just close enough to hit them all. BRDs and CORs can still run to opposite positions to buff melee/whm even without pianissimo.

I'd say pup is the best one, partly becuase I'm biased as a pup, partly because it really does change how you would play the job. Without having to worry about overload we could probably ignore condenser attachment and water maneuvers to stop overload, and simply do 3x ice > nuke > 3x ice > nuke > deactivate > activate repeat, instead of the typical 1 ice nuke > water, 3x ice nuke > deactivate activate. So it's essentially like casting two AMII very high magic accuracy spells instead of a ok accuracy teir IV and 1 AMII high magic acc spell per minute.

For the melee side, pummel is our best ws, so we lose nothing by using it. And storing tp to 300 isn't too painful either, as the automaton get's the benefits as well, letting it happily spam it's tp away with 40% double attack while we work on keeping the aftermath renewed. And valoredge has the high melee skill, and attachments to increase its attack/acc to the point it can make full use of such power.

The only issue would be having the master build tp to 300% in time to keep it up full time on some HNMs with real high evasion/defense... but this is coming from a pup who never gets in the brd/cor parties because my automaton does all the work, and I still manage to hit kirin for damage(though low attack means it can do anywhere from 4 to 50 damage >.>) with pizza and only halfway decent gear, so a pimped out relic pup with proper support probably wouldn't have many issues.

I'd love to see my Oniwaka with either 40% double attack and 35-37%ish haste (with 3x wind maneuver and turbo charger, pantin hands, and moogle hat with 5 pet haste), or 80% double attack and super high melee acc, with 13% haste duking it out on HNMs. Maybe toss in a cor for beast/puppet's roll as well, since even without those and missing 4 melee skill merits for him, he still hits kirin consistantly for 50-70 damage and 85%ish melee accuracy, and 340ish cannibal blades (very consistant damage, only resist's if kirin happens to move to max range when it fires, which isn't often).

Personally, all that to me sounds more job changing than.... paralynaga. :s

I'm wondering if lolpup is still lolpup with all this new pet enhancing gear SE is dumping on us... Would be awesome to see a mythic pup decked out in full automaton enhancing gear.

lolpup hasn't been lolpup for quite some time now >.>; the added pet gear just helps our automaton out more, but even before that we did very potent and accurate nukes on just about everything blm can, barring the stupidly high int mobs like kirin that give me trouble (though no drachen roll, which would help a lot), and for those valorbot does quite well on.

We might not be a good zerg job, but for anything that requires you to beat on something for more than 10 seconds, pup is going to either hold it's own or really shine. The tougher the mob, the strong it shines compared to other jobs, as the automaton doesn't suffer the same acc and attack issues other jobs require a mini army of buffers to balance out.

Honestly, Oniwaka outnukes blms AMII for almost everything without stupidly high INT, and even on those can still do quite good amounts. (Oni does 910 aero IV on kirin, but as soon as other blms start joining in resist patch coupled with kirins int makes onis resist rate go way up >< need a cor to balance that out) Some other examples are his thunder III doing 740 to genbu, bliz IV doing 1.2k to Ix'mnk, 1.6k+ to Dea, etc. Kirin is the only one that gives me resist issues though, so I just use valorbot.

Valorbot is really strong as well, and he isn't an mp sink like other melees, just a gilsink to the poor pup using automaton oils. DX He's quite hardy with role reversal to swap master and auto HP (master usually is /sch to heal hp back between role reversals, and help on healing), repair, and cannibal blade. As far as damage goes, he hits kirin for 50-70 a whack without cor rolls, Omega for about the same, normal limbus mobs for 80-90+, though I swap to sharpshot if the monster's are weak enough for SS's B melee skill to handle fine for tp building and sexy armor piercer.

I mean, hate free (kinda, we can shed our hate once a minute) bottomless mp pool, run-casting powerful blm, hate free (literally, cures give no hate to auto) cure V slinging infiniMP whm bot, low hate powerful DoT, no support required war bot... whats not to love about pup in endgame?

The only place I've yet to find pup more useful than my blu is ACP fight, since anyone can handle the adds, and the damn thing seems to melee anyone who gets in range regardless if it's being tanked (like a bound ranger mob?), so doesn't seem feasible to let valoredge melee it.

Honestly, lolpup deserved the name only before whm and blm bots came out, but if you wanna keep hinting to SE we need more buffs, I wont complain when we become buffed to the point of making sam look gimp. =D

When I say lolpup I mean more the mentality others have towards it by default from word of mouth, regardless of the fact they've probably never partied with one, well there was that one time in valkurm dunes and that pup sucked so automatically I assume all pups suck.

I was just musing if all this gear would finally start making people clue into the fact that pup doesn't suck without having to be in a meripo with a several million gil automaton.

Chariots - I already mentioned this in my initial post, and I give it credit.

Soulflayers - all the shit they do? Ga spells, tribulation, and sleepga. Of those, Ga spells should be stunned anyway, unless your LS sucks. Sleepga is countered by poison pots and/or sublimation. And Esuna rocks against Tribulation. So why aren't your WHMs standing in close? And keeping stoneskin up?
Reprobation - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more

Tortoise song? - We talking about the move that removes bard songs? Genbu giving you nightmares?
I'm talking about any kind of aoe move that takes off all your buffs. Sure a WHM is strong enough to stand in on most fights-- right up until they find themselves up there with no shadows, no stoneskin, no tect/shell, etc.

ulu - not sure what you're referring to here. Undulation perhaps? I covered that in my post, too. Esuna works just fine for it, and you don't need to be in Misery.
    Ululation.

Are you really trying to tell me having your paralyna person get paralyzed is a good thing because this one time you got it off your first cast?

    I sure hope not.

BLM mobs - ga spells are stunned in your LS, right?
Depends on the mob. I *REALLY* hope I don't have to go over a list of mobs who you don't, or can't stun -ga's from.

Even despite that, Shellra V, WHMs MDB, and Stoneskin mean that I'm generally alive.
Alive is one thing, useful and safe on hate is another.

ninja mobs - Hey, I'll admit that sometimes in Dynamis, people won't stun or unload TP at 50% life so it dies quick. So sometimes we eat a big mijin. Even if I take your advice and stand at range, a big mijin will still wipe out the melee, and then come snack on me. So standing at range does nothing.
People survive mijin all the time... just not often people with 800 hp.

Goblin mobs - I'm trying to think of a gob bomb that seriously was a threat... Sometimes I take a hit, and it's enough to drop me to 50% and stop my sublimation from charging. That's annoying. I suppose you're referring to Dynamis? WHMs not keeping Stoneskin up?
hi2u fripan spam, dice dispels, etc. etc.

Summoner mobs - Two types: ones that have an avatar out at all times (in which case they should be slept if your LS is competant), and the ones that don't, and just astral flow around 50%. It's not that hard to pay attention to life, and move back. Trying to think of a SMN mob with nasty aoe status debuffs, and coming up short, tho. And if your melees die to astral flow, the whm is generally going to die no matter where they are standing.
Unless of course that WHM is competent, in which case they'll be able to either repose or kite.

aoe stuns - trying to think of where this might be a problem. Which mob has aoe stuns, and other nasty aoe status debuffs. Perhaps you could be more specific?
Goblins, yagudo, quadav have knockbacks and aoe's, etc.

Skeletons - Their aoe isn't bad. Again, where's your stoneskin?
Sorry, I'm in Einherjar. It disappeared the last time it aoe'd, .8 seconds ago. My bad, I'll get more fast cast.

It's all well and good to toss these scary words out, but I was kinda looking for things more specific that I haven't already covered. As I said before in my first post, Chariots and Wyverns are nasty to stand in for, since the aoe on the former can be bad, and the para proc on the latter is bad.
A smart mage is not going to stand in forcing themselves to recast buffs, eat tons of extra damage, etc.

I'm sorry that you've apparently literally never fought a ToAU king, or half the t3 znm's, or any t4 znm, etc. etc.

    But the usefulness is there.

See, WHMs have a natural Magic Defense Bonus, and a high MND. We take less magic damage than most everyone else, and para doesn't proc as often on us. Unless you're taru with an extreme HP > MP convert setup, 1k+ HP is usually sufficient to survive everything, especially with stoneskin up.
Hi, I'm an elvaan smn with dalmatica. GTFO with your paralyna bragging, paralyzed healers cost lives.

Can you get away with it? Sure.

Is it fucking retarded to choose to get yourself parad so that you can paralyna the group easier? Damn straight.

Not to mention, between barspells, Auspice, Esuna, Cura, etc. there are more benefits to standing in range then ever before. It's also helpful for when I drop big curagas. If, by some chance I do happen to pull hate, the melee don't need to run far to get it back off me. For some reason, melee really hate when the mob runs far away as they WS, and they lose their TP. =(
I was in the tank group on tiamat eating dmg as a smn doing the main healing in 05 when we didn't realize touchdown cleared tp and did a lot of shit on the ground.

I fully understand the virtues of being able to stand in.

I also fully understand the virtues of not having to. Apparently, you're missing that part. (although I'm quite certain you see it quite clearly and just don't want to admit it because you think it'll make you "wrong," but anyway)

Edit: Nirvana is more than a B-staff+1. Pet: MAB+20 is nothing to sneeze at nowadays, especially given the other pet: MAB gear floating around. Most people just stop at the -4 perp, which is nice enough by itself. That means a free Garuda, which means you can leave it out to build TP, which is even more damage dealt via Wind Blade. As I said, in theory, we're looking at 2k+ hateless nukes, for someone with a geared SMN. What is that worth? Not sure.
Agreed, Nirvana is amazing, right on par with PUP.

I'm in pretty big distress over which weapon to get. I'm nearly at the point of being 100% done with stage1 of the mythic quest and i'm half done with stage 2 requirements. My 4 jobs are smn, drg, pup, and bst.

Ryunohige is starting to look very nice for the jump augment, but I think i'd rather go for a gungnir for drg.

My actual struggle is between smn and pup. I primarily use merit pacts and usually have 0-3 mp/tick perpetuation so nirvana sounds great. Not to mention by the time i finish i will have obtained every avatar enhancing item in the game anyway.

Pup's mythic i think is on a whole nother level though. It essentially removes all penalty of pushing the puppet to the max, and makes pup a zerg capable job during aftermath with triple haste or triple DA maneuvers up. Nirvana doesn't transform the job like Kenkonken has the potential to do. So i'm stuck

oh and on the thread with what we know so far i'd put whm, pup on top

Simply answered: What weapon looks the most badass.

I said it once and I'll say it again, you dont blow all that time and money on a weapon for its stats, you do it to put it on and afk in the middle of WG with an Epeen message in your bazaar stating you blew 100 million gil on this weapon.

So get the most badass looking one, if someone tries to say it was a bad choice tell them to get it themselves then.

This is going to sound somewhat retarded...

SMN has higher staff skill than pup does h2h >.>

    So... picture:

    Sam sub.

    Nirvana, pole grip, tiphia
    ohat/wala, charm/torque, hollow, brutal
body(I'll get to this), nashira hands, duhr on rings
augment acc back, swift, nashira legs/feet

Body could be pet mab/macc, and player accuracy if needed.

In a good zerg, in place of one of the melee, if the fight lasts exactly 2 minutes, and you started with 300tp, you should be looking at around 3.5k dmg from PC > Wind Blade > Wind Blade (or just 3x wind blade if you start with 300 tp on avatar too), plus a few hundred, up to maybe a thousand total between your garland, your melee, any spirit takers you get in between, and your avatar's melee, all with 50% double attack up the whole fight.

    Plus garland lowers defense.

Now, that's not souleater kraken numbers, by any means... but you're looking at consistently at least 3-4k total, with occasional big numbers on pacts pushing you up near the 5k range...

In a 2 minute zerg fight, from a SMN. And I'm being somewhat conservative here, not really giving much credit at all to a smn/sam itself with 6 songs.

If that's not game changing, I don't know what is.

lol i totally know what you mean..
as much as i used to enjoy Nyzul, repeating it over and over has really worn out the fun of it. tho i havent actually gotten my mythic, i already have my 150k tokens and dont intend to do nyzul isle investigation anymore. unless my friends need help or something.

ps. plow, in a good zerg, you're looking at a fight where your avatar neither dies, nor gets enfeebled or even slept in any way possible. because there's no way to relieve statuses off your avatar, if it gets inflicted with anything your best course of action is to resummon... and everything about doing that, especially in your zerg model, is bad... less dmg from avatar/master, less TP to wind blade on, possiblity of recast issues.

a SMN would still have little place in a proper zerg, but it does have the potential to melee with pet out more efficiently... but in that sense is only gamebreaking for casual events. no one is going to take a melee smn seriously at endgame, as well they shouldnt
