Mazagati (Even though he has an epic Mustache) is much worse than Mirgliata. I can see why you would think he is the worst ref ever after what you mentioned though.

Carwin got at least 5 good punches(and Carwin punches are nothing to laugh at) in after Mir was unconscience, his arms were limp by his head, and Mirgliata just stood there watching. I'm not faulting Carwin, you keep going until the ref stops you, but Mirgliata just stood there with his thumb up his ass pretending he knew what the fuck was going on.

In the Welterweight division the top fighters are wrestlers because they had to be good wrestlers to stop Hughes from taking them down, well it started with Hughes, now they have to try and stop GSP.

Wrestling wins championships, Hughes proved it, GSP is proving it, and Fitch is proving it (his only loss in UFC was to GSP), and Couture proved it and Lesnar is proving it in the HW division. The only way to beat a wrestler is to stop the take down, which in turn makes you a better wrestler, so it gets passed down, making most of the division good at wrestling, so when they face someone who has weak wrestling, you get those lay and pray fights.

That being said, a guy like Crocop made a living as a standup fighter, and the reason we pulled this off is because he had great takedown defense.

Hardy was getting dumped on his ass from a simple single-leg - that shouldn't happen. I know GSP is the master of shooting, but there was no resistance whatsoever from Hardy.

Good fight regardless, I just couldn't understand how the announcers were considering GSP as the underdog in this fight lol. Perhaps to hype up the audience?

You'd figure he'd work on that in prep for GSP.

Dana White pretty much said that in the post-interviews. You can't come into a fight with argueably the best take-down fighter in MMA, and not have some take down defence.

Hardy would've had more of a chance if GSP didn't get KO'd by Sera, because GSP is looking for that lucky shot now, and will take you down so you don't have that chance.

I like that hardy was confident though, he worked hard and earned that fight, maybe better luck next time. Uh, am I the only person happy that Mir got dominated first round? >.>

i remember thiago alves having great take down defense, hughes and kosheck couldnt even test him yet gsp tossed him around like a rag doll. bj penn has legendary take down defense too and gsp ate his shit for breakfast. i dont think really any amount of take down defense training can prepare someone for gsp's skillz

By the same token while Crocop has really good takedown defense, Lesnar would put him on his ass in two seconds flat.

It sucks that the most boring to watch "fighting style" (wrestling) is becoming so important for elite level competition*.

*except for LHW for some reason

Also they should change the criteria so that "damage dealt" is like 80% of the judges' guidelines, and octagon control and other shit matters way less.

Call it the French Blanket rules.

    This basically.

The thing with wrestling is that a medium level wrestler can take down someone much better if they can get that initial position. What makes great wrestlers great is that they don't even let that initial position happen. What GSP does so amazingly is time his level change to get that position on people and from there it's game over. I don't think many people can ever train their TDD to stop a shot after gsp has already grabbed their leg. What they need to do is not overextend their punch so gsp can duck under, not give a lazy kick to the leg so gsp can grab it. Limiting those opportunities and working on getting up off your back are going to be more important than training 1000 sprawls.

I don't even think getting amazing bjj off your back is going to help much because gsp's top game is very very good. Learn some sweeps to create a scramble and get your ass up.

The one thing Hardy did well was take advantage of GSP's poor-technique subs and use them to scramble to his feet - he ended up standing up out of both the armbar and the kimura if I recall correctly.

And then he quickly got taken back down again.

Kenny Florian (156) vs. Takanori Gomi (155)
Roy Nelson (263) vs. Stefan Struve (248
Nate Quarry (186) vs. Jorge Rivera (186)
Ross Pearson (156) vs. Dennis Siver (156)
Andre Winner (156) vs. Rafaello Oliveira (156)
Jacob Volkmann (155) vs. Ronys Torres (155)
Robert Emerson (154) vs. Nik Lentz (155)
Caol Uno (156) vs. Gleison Tibau (156)
Yushin Okami (184) vs. Lucio Linhares (184)
Gerald Harris (186) vs. Mario Miranda (186)
Charlie Brenneman (170) vs. Jason High (170)

I'd love to see Gomi win but I think Florian's kickboxing will be enough to survive and he'll eventually find his way to a sub.

A lot of good match-ups for this card imo. Most of them could go either way.

Renzo Gracie v. Matt Hughes for UFC 112

Maybe not blockbuster news, but I took classes at RGA a couple years ago.... so I'm looking forward to Renzo whooping up on Hughes in Abu Dhabi.

I would also like to see Gomi win if for no other reason than to have BJ have a fight that isn't a rematch. He did look in good shape at the weigh ins so maybe he won't gas and can put on a good fight. If he does get to fight BJ I think they should have to prove who has the better chin so the fight would involve them smashing their heads together like rams. I'm also disappointed that Uno wasn't given an easier fight considering the outcomes of the past 2.
