Wait you mean Anderson Silva underperformed? Say it ain't so!I concur. I think he was just embarrassed by his performance.

I hate when people use visible damage as a sort of metric for how beat up they got. Everyones skin reacts differently to damage. If you flick marcus davis on the face he will balloon up with bruising but if you drop an anvil on BJ's or Andersons face they will hardly show any effect. It's an almost useless measure of damage.
As for the rib injury. There is a gif of anderson holding his right side after the first round is over when he walks to his corner. The only big shots to the body I remember were to the left side. There is also the fact that they were the main event, there is so much more pressure on those guys to fight injured and not pull out. This is the guy who fought travis lutter just weeks after getting knee surgery on both legs.
I'm not gonna dispute that he was injured in some way since he was definitely more sluggish then usual, but no way it was broken ribs bad.
Bruised ribs could be likely. Still hurts like hell... But if his ribs were broken he wouldn't be walking around. Watch Scott Smith vs Pete Sell to see what broken ribs does to a guy.
Spoiler: show
Here is a gif where Anderson catches Chaels (R) foot and then asks Chael (R) to lie down so he can rub his body over him in gay jujitsu. Chael (R) said hell no and promptly rolled away.

That roll and the double ear boxing were the best parts of the fight. Almost spit out my rye laughing so hard.
Edit: Found the gif.

What I kept thinking while he was doing it.
Sonnens GNP just wasnt as damaging as you would have thought it should have been. Sonnen did dominate in take downs and wrestling, but Anderson's elbows ate Sonnen's face, which later in the fight cause Sonnen to sit back in Anderson's guard and he got caught in a triangle. Sonnen would have won that fight.
Would have been awesome if Sonnen would have kicked Anderson also.
Crouching tiger, hidden republican.
Reports seem to confirm Anderson had a separated rib before the fight and suffered a cracked rib during the fight and will be out until next year.
The fact that he even fought with a separated rib is fucking ridiculous - let alone to go 5 rounds.
Holy shit was Steven Seagal really in Anderson's corner?
He couldn't have had a separated rib because googling found me this
"No matter how much you may want to, you can’t participate in sports when you have separated ribs. The resulting pain will be too much to allow you to continue."
He clearly participated in a sport so his rib wasn't separated.
Honestly, there are no universal truths to pain tolerance. I have done plenty of athletic activities with injuries that I never should have been able to. I got hit with the blast of an RPG while in Iraq...it threw me backwards 15 feet and face first into a parked car. It broke 5 ribs, my occipital bone, my nose in 3 places, my jaw in two places, and my kneecap. Once I regained my bearings, I dragged two other soldiers that died in the blast back behind cover and continued on with the mission. I honestly had no idea I had broken ribs. I knew my chest hurt a bit when I exerted effort...but had no idea it was bad. I walked around for 3 weeks with 5 broken ribs before I went to the doctor and told him I thought something was wrong because I couldn't really take deep breaths. I have known people in the fight game that kept training with broken/severely bruised ribs before they realized they were badly hurt.
TL;DR, everyone is different. The reports I read said he had a bone bruise, more or less, before the fight and cracked it during. A separated rib is much more serious than a bruised rib, but still able to be pushed through with painkillers if need be. Just because someone can't take prescription drugs because they'll pop a piss test doesn't mean they can't shoot up novacaine in area to push through.
