im sick of champs being injured and getting blown up in their first title defense. it almost happened to Brock, it just happened to shogun and it WILL happen to cain. ring rust is very real. you cant have a year + off and then have a #1 contender thrown at you and expect to win.

When was the last time somebody who took a year off and won a big fight? I can't think of a time off the top of my head.

brock was out for a year in his carwin fight. there are probably many more examples but it's hard to know if the reason for the loss is due to rustiness from being out so long or due to the reason they were out in the first place. If someone comes back after a year from knee surgeries is it cage rust or their knees not be quite as healed/strong as they need to be. Either way it's usually not a good thing for that fighter

Brock didn't really start turtling on reaction to strikes until after he almost died iirc too.

Closest thing to a great striker Brock faced before Carwin was Heath Herring.

Looks like Mirko Filipovic has one more fight on his contract and he's considering whether to retire now or after that last fight... whichever way he goes I hope they send him off on a high note. He certainly deserves it.
