with the cardio Overeem displayed i think he gets murdered by Cain and has issues with Bigfoot, his problem at LHW was always chin and cardio and despite his new size and striking chops nothing i've seen offsets his traditional weaknesses

Overeem is like Rampage and Gomi and probably some other strikers that I can't remember where they just throw too few strikes and it can often cost them against more active but less talented strikers.
In MMA Overeem cant cover up quite like he would do with the large gloves in K1 and then explode with the 1 or 2 big punches/knees
The first round had 50 seconds of ground work. The Reem had 1 takedown in that round. And he landed only 1 power knee in that round.
Not that it really matters I guess. Just sayin', the Reem literally did nothing in the first round. Which is sort of weird, cause I expected him to really put some pressure on early.
It was pretty clear to me that Overeem didn't want to commit to much of anything because he was terrified of ending up on his back, period. I wouldn't read much into his striking capability in general by his performance tonight, he was focused on just staying up when he was up.
I still don't see how he won that first round, he literally did almost nothing.
He is still a tentative striker even in K1. Cover up, and then throw big shots. It's in the covering up phase that I can see Bigfoot landing enough shots that add up to a tko or decision
You can't use the gameplan that Werdum did tonight and expect a decision. You HAVE to get the sub.
Overeem may be best served getting top control but I think Bigfoot is a strong enough guy to stop those trips or power takedowns .
i can imagine Fedor watching this fight thinking "huh... maybe i could beat him..."
i always said overeem is overrated. he'd get methodically torn apart by ufc's top hw's. i'm leaning towards josh barnett for the tournament, though i'll be cheering for sergei kharitonov.
Barnett looking more and more like the favorite in this GP after tonight. People forever kept thinking Overeem's K-1 credentials would translate to MMA and yet here was Werdum standing toe to toe with him. Excusing it for being scared of the takedown is irrelevant because that's part of the game.
I'm not excusing his fight by any means...I just didn't score any round for Werdum either. Part of the price you pay for trying to "lure" the guy to the ground by acting like you got knocked down is that everyone is supposed to think you got knocked down. Overeem is going to have to open up his striking if he wants to beat some of the other guys that won't just stand in front of him and wait to get punched.
thing is barnett has always been a damn good fighter, his career was sidelined due to the drug issues, not because of a bunch of losses or whatever. alistair on the other hand, i think is the most overhyped fighter since brock lesnar. he's considered indestructible cos he mowed through a bunch of nobodies, and this assumption that because he's a k-1 champ that that also means he'll be great in mma. go silva!
I'm convinced Dos Santos would pick him apart in the stand-up after tonight.
reem is god
