Cristiane "Cris Cyborg" Santos, widely regarded as the best female fighter in mixed martial arts, has been suspended for testing positive for steroids.

The California State Athletic Commission announced on Friday that it has suspended Cyborg because her drug test following her most recent fight, a 16-second knockout of Hiroko Yamanaka, came back positive for metabolites of the anabolic steroid stanozolol. The result of the Cyborg-Yamanaka fight will be changed to a no decision.

"Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters," CSAC Executive Officer George Dodd said in a statement. "Anabolic agents and other banned substances put not only the users of those agents at risk, but their opponents as well. The commission simply will not tolerate their use."

The CSAC's announcement did not say how long Cyborg will be suspended. She has also been fined $2,500.

This is bad news for Cyborg, Strikeforce, Showtime and for all of women's mixed martial arts. Cyborg has been the most dominant female fighter in the sport and one of the few women who draws fans to Strikeforce broadcasts on Showtime. It also calls into question whether her accomplishments in the cage have always been tainted by the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Women's MMA, which is struggling just to survive, just saw one of its highest-profile fighters get a major black eye.

It's basically the Barnett/Sylvia thing all over again. Incoming Rousey/Kaufman moving up and fighting for the title... Or better yet, bring back Coenen and have her fight Rousey for 145. Kaufman can get Tate again.

Seriously. She's almost a man to begin with. Steroids was just unnecessary. I'm sure people will be casting a watchful eye on her husband now as well. Because if she's using you can bet your ass he's using as well.

Zuffa must hate Bigfoot or something. Directly after getting murdered by Cormier, they're giving him Cain? Cain is basically the same damn fighter Daniel is, but better... And higher ranked. I'd like to see BF win, but I just don't see it.

I guess Mir will be waiting on the winner of the GP. Hopefully Josh wins cause Barnett/Mir is a dream match up.

Strikeforce is just going to continue to get picked over until the UFC just decides to fold them into the same barn. If that's how it's going to end just do it now and start setting up unification bouts with top talents(which is tough to do since they are only what, 3 champs in SF atm?) Strikeforce is slowly drowning. It's like a wounded animal. Just finish it off quickly to spare it more pain.

i agree it's inevitable, and should happen Melendez, Jacare, Rockhold, Lawal and a few others deserve better fights and brighter lights, but they don't want to sacrifice the Showtime base and have no plans for women's MMA in the UFC so there are a few inhibiting obstacles Dana and Fertitta have to sort out

I think it makes sense for Zuffa to keep a prospect league afloat, and just bring over the talent when you think they're ready for the UFC. Also a league for old men to die in.

But yeah, certain fighters need to make the transition yesterday.

Been a while since posting but for anyone in the San Mateo/San Francisco area, Royce is going to be holding a seminar at the San Mateo Charles Gracie academy sometime early February if anyones interested in showing. You are expected to pay though, not sure how much yet but if anyone wants to come check it out I'll try and bring you more info as it comes to me.
