Finally found Martin Kampmann vs Carlos Condit video online, and holy fuck that was one of the best back and forth fights, I really hope they fight again. Who do you guys go for Kampmann vs Johnny Hendricks.

I think Hendricks wrassling will be the turning point, Kampmann doesn't have the same KO power Hendricks does but he's 50x more technical so he might pepper him and get the tko at some point. I'm not saying it'll happen but it can, I simply think it won't though...Hendricks has the beard of Zeus to lead him to victory.

pulling for kampmann just cuz i love his style, he is a very versatile fighter.

also hitman vs condit was the beginning of my love affair with carlos. i never watched WEC during his time there. that fight and his next couple fights v ellenburger and then v rory mac (best fight ever?) were all SO awesome. his KO of Dan Hardy was also awesome. Idk if i have ever celebrated a win so hard.

timing didn't have much to do with it, look at the punch placement. Hardy's hook (which is European style with the palm facing the floor) lands toward the back of Condit's jaw + along the neck which is way thicker and closer to the center of mass so it's less likely to produce the whiplash effect. Condit's lands towards the front of the jawline

difference is when Condit gets hit, and he gets hit hard and clean, it is kind of a crushing shot that pushes his entire upper body away, whereas when Hardy gets hit it's more of a snap that wobbles his fucking head and produces the acceleration ---> deceleration ---- > brain smashing against the side of the cranium momentum that get you knockouts

hell Hardy prolly has more power in his left hook than Condit and dudes have comparable chins. it's why Anderson Silva TKOs knocks down everyone with his punches despite not having the power to ever produce a true one-shot knockout with a punch

the first few UFC events are on youtube right now. watched 1 & 2 and man... it's like a completely different event. they were putting so much emphasis on pitting people of different "categories" (karate, kung fu, "exotic", grappling) whereas today everyone is expected to know a little of everything and has their strengths and weaknesses. they seemed to make it a point to get a wide diverse range of styles - they even had an "american ninjutsu" guy, whereas these days the three pillars are generally accepted as kickboxing, jiujitsu, and wrestling, colored by whatever traditional martial arts background they had, if any.

i feel old i remember watching the first UFC event with the people at my dojo, and discussing the fights with my instructor. man i'm old.

patrick smith reminds me a lot of alistair overeem, and i am not talking about their skin tone.

There were lots of Vale Tudo guys who were cross-trained even back then, like Marco Ruas. They simply weren't invited to the Gracie event because they didn't fit the "1 style" criteria. I know people don't like to talk about it, but early UFC was all kinds of goofy. Even had some worked fights like Taktarov/Macias and Frye/Hall.

MMA was silly pre-2000 imo.

not surprising, at least the first event was basically set up for the specific purpose of showing off gracie jiujitsu.

but ken shamrock was pretty multi-faceted wasn't he? doesn't shootfighting include striking, or was it enough that everything he did was all under the umbrella of a singular "shootfighting" style?

Ken sort of knew how to strike. I mean the rules of Pancrase allowed stand up striking and ground strikes, but there were a lot of agreements to just grapple. And Ken didn't hook up with Mezger, Vernon, etc to create Lion's Den until many months after UFC 1, so his striking training was limited at that specific time.

Nah I'm not that big into betting. Although I was looking at the payout if I dropped 20 and did the parlay for the whole card. Would have been around 82k dollars lol.
