Eh, I'd stay away from Magic Hat's anything. Their beers are pretty uniformly bad. I'd try brewpacks from various breweries to feel out what styles you like, if you really want to get into it.

Blue Moon is good, but not very...beery. Too flavored. Hooegarden is the same way.

btw if you want a cheaper bock that's surprisingly good, give Michelob's Amber Bock a shot. Yeah, it's Michelob, but it's good.

seconded re: stay away from magic hat. never had anything by them that i liked. only good for grabbing at parties after getting too drunk to taste much.

another good way to get into beer is to look for local breweries and brewpubs. i live in the poor side of CT (did you know that exists?) and we've got a bunch of decent places in close proximity. if you live somewhere that doesn't fucking suck like here, chances are your options are even better.

edit: incidentally, i've never been impressed by anything from sam adams... since i guess i haven't been posting on topic. further edit after seeing post below me: liked all smuttynose i've tried.

Just try other Dopplebocks yo - I've had some good ones, and no I can't remember what they were. Give ol' Smuttynose a shot. Worst case scenario you are out a few bucks.

Definately with you on the brewpubs. Even ones that aren't so great tend to have one or two beers that are good. Around Columbus, we have barley's which puts out an incredibly good Scottish Ale. It's one of the beers that made me get into good beers in the first place.

Wait, if Spaten Optimator counts as a dopplebock, then dopplebock is my favorite type of beer.

Had 3 liters of Optimator on my birthday recently, put my squarely on my ass, and goddamn is it delicious. Used to drink that shit by the boot back in the day at the Essen Haus in Madison, WI.

Careful about scotch ales...I tried some Steelhead Scotch Porter, had a really, really thick mouthfeel and was a pretty heavy brew. You could practically chew the fuckin thing. Also had a really smoky aftertaste, so if you go after a good scotch ale make sure you ask around first. Beer Advocate is a really great resource, I actually work for them and they have an insane amount of beers reviewed on their site so check that out if you want to do some research before buying blind.

The bar/restaurant near me called the Winking Lizard had Optimator as it's beer of the month recently and, on mondays, you could get it for 4 bucks for a 22 oz and good 40 cent wings. Dear god, that was an amazing month.

But yeah, as I was saying earlier, if it's an -ator, it's a doppelbock. For the best one I've ever had, look for Ayinger Celebrator. That stuff is ambrosia.

haha I'll call around tomorrow, like I said earlier I'm pretty set on these cherry wheats/dogfish heads right now, had several tonight. I know most liquor stores don't close till 11 but I live in Boston, I'm willing to bet at least one of the stores around here carry Spaten Optimator, hopefully I don't have to trek out too far on the T for it but from what I'm reading in this thread it's worth it.

Your hate is delicious. Not as delicious as having 44 oz of Optimator on tap for 8 bucks, but delicious nonetheless.

Ayinger Celebrator isn't hard to find in bottles. Jus' sayin'

do you ever go to sunset grill and tap? their beer selection is *huge*, and they have some of the best fries i've ever tasted.

haven't been to sunset, no, but from looking at that website i need to go. I'm also told The Independent and the Precinct down at union square are some sick places, and so is Tavern at the End of the World. also, The Burren. I've been to Grendel's Den which was phenomenal, that's where I went on my bday, and Sweetwater is 30 secs away from my campus so I frequent there pretty often. too many places to go, too much beer to try...it's overwhelming

I like a lot of the october fest beers, marzens. Spaten, Paulaner, Ayinger, Saranac, Sam Adams just to name a few.

Marzens hit the spot for me mainly because of the sweet malt. Most of the german malts anyways.

I just like drinking these styles of beer in the fall. Right now though, Yuengling for me works very well.

I'm kind of curious, (and maybe we should just make a "BEER!" thread...) but do a lot of you guys that consider yourselves beer connoisseurs really like wheat beer? I've tried most of the beers you all have listed and I absolutely hate wheat beer. I just don't even consider it real beer anymore...I don't really know any guys that truly know beer that like wheat beer. Its just...bleh

My tastes have really changed the last two years though. Going to Europe was the best thing I ever did, especially for my beer pallet. Kind of got into Guinness and Smithwicks(WHY ISNT THIS MORE FAMOUS) in Ireland, the classic higher temperature bitters from London, scores of Oktober fest beer in Munchen, and a day in Brussels hanging out at the Delirium bar was one of the greatest days of my life...I liked everything we drank pretty much, from the Bitters to the Abbeys to the select few Trappist beers...except for every single damn wheat beer.

After returning to the states, I must say my tastes have changed a lot. I really am into IPAs like Dogfish Head stuff and the heavier beers. Honestly, I think everyone needs to just go out and try different kinds of beer and go outside of their comfort zone, there are so many different beers all over the world and even right here in the U.S. Our Microbrew scene is really becoming quite impressive and allowing for a lot of creativity with beer.

Also, to whoever gave kudos to Amberbock being a good, inexpensive beer, I couldn't agree more. Its the beer I usually grab if I want a decent taste but being a college student I can't really sip on Delirium Tremens all day long. One beer that really impressed me that you all should try if you can find it was this "Winter Cask Ale" by Michelob, it was freaking fantastic.

Anyways...start a beer thread!
