My friends and I all thought the same thing. I've liked Cillian Murphy since 28 Days, and he rarely disappoints. If they did another movie, he would be a great villain to have.

As for the 3D, I dunno how it looks in regular cinemas, but I still stand by my IMAX 3D comments. I don't want to pay that much only to be in a full screening with no seat choice and end up in a shitty seat I can't see anything.

When you've become an Internet meme for your love of TRON, a movie theater really ought to let you watch the film in costume.

Back before the Disney remake, Jay Maynard was a superfan of the original video game and movie, TRON. He gained widespread Internet fame after obsessively documenting his intricate costume. From there, he became a convention darling and appeared on a handful of late-night talk shows.

But apparently the staff at a Minnesota movie theater hadn't heard of him. They refused to let him watch TRON: Legacy while wearing his light-up suit. Maynard says he believes the staff thought it would be too "distracting." But when you're watching a movie with tons of flashing lights and a bleeping electronic soundtrack, are you really going to be easily distracted? We say this is an act of nerd injustice.

The go game is weird to me though, assuming Quorra is black since the weaker player usually takes black, black seems to have the more aggressive style of play but there are parts of the board that NO competent player would leave alone, the group at the bottom left would have to be the current point of contention but if black lives at top left, it fucks up what is basically white's only territory giving black the win. While obviously it works as a metaphor for Flynn's ability to strategize, due to Go's complexity, it kind of looks like they just googled a go board instead of spending the <$1k it would take to get an old man from Chinatown to give them a match that fits the conditions of aggressive black vs patient and clearheaded white.

What character story? Better than Avatar? What?
I'm looking forward to a sequel of Bruno more than this cinematic dump.

Yeah, I assumed Quorra's black as well. You might notice it also matches their starting wardrobe too. Also, unless pieces have been removed, it looks like black didn't have a handicap (or freeform handicap was used).
It certainly doesn't help, not knowing which player has the next stone to place. Maybe we'll get lucky and the DVD will have a deleted exposition scene where they happen to be playing.

I'm still kind of somewhat new, I've only been going for it seriously for a few months total. My early attempts showed I seem to have a knack for it
    Spoiler: show
I played some casual games with friends back in college when someone brought a set in, and nobody was able to beat me. I picked up on ladders, tenuki, and sente/ko threats spontaneously.
    .
I started working my way through the major books. I've finished Janice Kim's first book (and got it 100%), and Iwamoto Kaoru's (though I failed about half the problems starting halfway through the book). I'll likely fire up iGoWin again soon, to see if I've improved any. Before any study, I was able to play it to 12-kyu, where you start playing no-handicap black. I'll be doing Cho Chikun's Go: A Complete Introduction next, then Bozulich and the next two Kim books, then I'll start giving Go servers a shot. What's really annoying is, the US Go Congress is gonna be in Santa Barbara in six months, but it'd be... presumptuous, to think of trying for it in that timeframe.

I picked up the lower left, same as you. Three groups, all right on the edge of capture.
To me, the upper right looks like black is in trouble if it can't pull off some good moves. But if it can save itself, it could probably cut white in the top center.
I'm not good enough to read the upper right yet though, to tell if black can make it live, or white can play inside and kill it.

    Also, I want that board.

Not to derail, but is there any particular recommended material one can read to learn to play? I tried to pick up a random book in B&N once to get the idea that way but was completely lost 20 pages in. :<

By all means go, you would probably be able to get better Japanese books dedicated specifically to Tesuji, as well as Openings and Closing, I found those ALOT more valuable then any I found at Barnes and Noble and Amazon (8 years ago).

Black is dead @ right top corner, it has no eyes, the left side of the group is already in atari. Black will be dead before he can surround anything there. The Middle right is actually the most interesting thing for me, its alive, but white can reduce the upper right corner of the territory by about 20 points, and yet its the kind of play to make black's territory work that should be Flynn's, its not aggressive, to make that the winning territory you need strong mid and end play which, Quorra's line leads me to believe is where Flynn is strongest. Anyways, assuming black would live barely in the bottom left, top left is what decides the game really. All in all I think its just a poor illustration of what they were trying to show with the dialogue.

Norellicus, at least 1 book is honestly the best way to start. Janice Kim's Learn to play Go Volume 1 is awesome; 2-4 will teach you some of the finer points as well and then you should be fine to dive right in, and play online. Alternatively after reading those books, try and find a local American Go Association chapter meeting, there should be at least 1-2 ppl willing to play a game with you to teach you.

Cantih, go to the Go meeting, in 6 months if you play online even a few times a week you'll be low kyus by then, which is obviously too low to play competitively but low enough kyu to appreciate the finer points of the pro/high Dan amateur games displayed therein, you also should be able to get great Japanese books on tesuji, openings, etc, that will teach you the techniques and shit you need to understand and develop good opening reasoning.

And yeah.. Hero's Quest, its the heart of this and most blockbuster movies rly. It was done so much better here then in Transformers 2, Avatar or anything else that comes to mind in the last few years (i.e. no robot heaven, no transporting Dune from Arrakis to Pandora without any of the political intrigue, etc.) And that should honestly be the main criteria for these kinds of movies. The plot will rarely be original, but if it can tell the Hero's quest in a competent and slightly original manner then its a good movie.

Saw it last night in 3-D because that was the only option at the theater I was at (and the theater serves beer and food in the theater, so it wins my vote over saving $5). Plot was OK so long as you didn't actually think about actually relating it to the computer. Acting was OK, although due to Jeff Bridges' acting, when I saw Flynn's place, all I could think was "That rug really brings the room together," and couldn't stop giggling. The effects were fun, the music was good, pretty much exactly what I was expecting. I was able to mostly ignore the incongruities between how computers "really work" and the Grid world, so it didn't bug me too much. Was hoping to see the grid spiders again, no luck. The only thing I really, really didn't like was
    Spoiler: show
when Sam and Quorra returned to the real world, there was just a bright flash of light, and then he was dealing with computer hardware. It seemed like there was an entire scene missing, where he rematerializes, and Quorra shows up as well and goes "Wow, there's more than three colors in this world!" How did she show up? Where did her "matter" come from? Did her Tron suit come with her, or did they magically morph into the leather outfit she was wearing on the bike? It's presumably not a budget thing, probably more of a "How do we do this without making it look ridiculously stupid?" and not being able to figure it out. Regardless, it completely pissed me off, and kind of left a sour taste in my mouth for the end of the film.

The spec-fiction person in me wants a sequel to explore the implications of a program being in the real world, and if Flynn's grid were hooked up to the internet.
The rest of me knows Disney isn't going to do that well.

I don't get the complains about Tron's small part in the movie. Tron appeared like halfway through the first and outside of his final battle he doesn't do too much. I thought the character of Ram was more interesting than Tron.

^. The story had plot holes that would have been a writer's nightmare to explain. Shit's hard, and because of that the film wont be #1 anywhere imo. But I honestly think the music was well done and I could see it getting nominations for best sound mixing/editing or original song/score. I just lit the fuck up when Obi-Wan Kenobi(all the starwars similarities were hilarious) enters the room at Zuse's. Wouldn't have been the same without the music.

Yes the girl was very cute, definitely a fuck.

Onto the film itself, personally I found it to be visually stunning and the bike wars were on point. The action was fun and the entire universe was equally as impressive, however..the plot was extremely weak with the endless possibilities they had to work with. Personally I would have much more enjoyed the movie if there was absolutely zero dialogue and the entire Daft Punk soundtrack was played over the sequences, but that's just me.
