I don't watch many movies or TV shows.
i didn't see this movie till i was out of boot and into the fleet. i was fucking amazed on how close the boot camp part was to my experiance, except we had more yelling and instead of one drill instructor on your ass it was 3-4, 3-4 (4th being senior DI) during the day, 1 at night. wish they would have shown how they fucked with us on firewatch lol that would have made the movie a lot more funnier for me

May be just an urban legend, but I was always told that the drill instructor in the movie was a DI in real life. They brought him in to train the actor that would play the part but he did such a kick ass job they just gave him the role.
That character is so good. I usually just turn the movie off after he takes one to the chest.
R. Lee Ermey - Biography
Also, picture:Was not intended to be in Full Metal Jacket (1987). He was hired as a technical advisor for the actor who was to play the drill sergeant, but he did such a good job at it that Ermey himself was hired for the part.

He also became quite a bit actor after that.. I remember he was the police chief in "Seven".
R. Lee is the man, and yeah, he's a badass IRL just like he is in the movie.
He also played House's dad.
