There's no way to completely get rid of the evidence. Deleting files only puts a ? in front of the file name and hides it. You can't ever truly delete it completely. To quote my computing professor: "The only way to completely get rid of any evidence is to shoot your HDD and throw it in a lake".

I've been crawling the web for the last half hour re-researching newsgroups and usenet after seeing your rant. lol I used to use newsleecher/newzbin like crazy because AT&T had unlimited newsgroups usage years back, and I eventually ran out of things to download and cancelled my subscription.

Between being paranoid about public torrents, not knowing shit about private trackers, not having a clue about any of the what.cd interview trivia and having a steady desire for movies, anime, music and TV shows, it seems like the only way at this point. lol The only other option would be paying for a VPN, but they still seem a little sketchy along with a little speed degradation. This is what I use. $10 a month for 30gb of downloads. Some of their income also goes to bribing the copyright owners, so they don't really care to close it down. And the longer you've subscribed, the more GB you get each month. Last Christmas they gave me a 100gb bonus.

And again, I don't consider downloading stealing. It does the very same thing recording a song off the radio do. Most every copyright owner consider that OK, but downloading the same song they do not like. Hell, streaming Heroes off of NBC is apparently OK, but downloading it is a big no-no? What about recording a movie shown on TV? Is that stealing?

I mean, really, its already sponsored by companies, and the show is filled with "hidden" commercials, wouldn't they want it to reach out to as many people as possible? Personally I don't consider downloading a movie or TV show stealing, but I suppose its a gray area.

He has downloaded games and movies before they came out. According to the MPAA, RIAA and ESA that is stealing. They don't care what your intentions are. Its pretty black in white in their eyes no grey areas.

Writing zeros will get rid of the data. If you had traces of old data left after overwriting, that'd start causing all sorts of problems for data stability. Instead, that doesn't happen - it's a one, or it's a zero, not some ghostly in-between state.

In the computer forensics course I took, they addressed this, basically said that it's a myth, which is all the more reason to snap an image as soon and as untouched as possible.

I mean, if you just "deleted" it, sure, more than likely the data is still there, waiting to be overwritten.


Still, getting rid of the data doesn't work. They know your modem (at least) was the one that downloaded the file. You can be all Jammie about it and deny that it was -you-, but remember she replaced the HDD and all that and still got found guilty.

Anyway, chances are that your ISP got a warning letter and passed it on to you. I work in IT for college athletics, so I've seen (and recieved, due to my name being associated with ethernet ports) DMCA takedown notices. They usually start with asking you to stop. If you don't, well, that's where problems can come in.

Thanks for the in depth post. I feel a bit more at ease after talking to some people who have received these and also from some of the posts here. I'm not going to really d/l anything anymore and if I am, gonna be very careful about it. Seems like the vast majority who have recieved these, it is nothing but a warning. I really hope MS or Epic doesn't pursue legal action, which I don't think they will. Just hoping for the best really.
