Wouldn't necessarily say this is a case of identity theft because I think it's an isolated incident, but here's the story.
A month or two ago, I went to a Tire/Car Care place to get an oil change, and like most places, they take down your information (name, address, not ssn). So I gave them my first/last name, and address. Paid with a bank card.
Fast forward to this afternoon, when I get a brand new credit card and bill for the Tire Place, with my name and address on the bill (with my middle initial incorrect). Some asshole put 1,000 in car repairs on the credit card, during the 2nd and 7th of July (for those of you who don't know, I was went home to Cincinnati from late June to mid July).
So I call the Customer Service # listed on the bill, which is an automated system, and it asks for the account number and the last 4 digits of my SSN. I put the Account number like it says on the bill and use the digits of my SSN, and the system says it can't find the account.
Is it possible for someone to use a different SSN? Also, I do a lot of online shopping and never had any kind of identity breach, so this makes me pretty suspicious that it's an inside job from someone working at the auto care place.
I've called Transunion and had them put a fraud alert on my credit report, and left a message on the sheriff dpts fraud hotline machine (they weren't available/closed or w/e). Anyone else have something similar happen? What else should I do?
