    Credit Card Fraud

Wouldn't necessarily say this is a case of identity theft because I think it's an isolated incident, but here's the story.

A month or two ago, I went to a Tire/Car Care place to get an oil change, and like most places, they take down your information (name, address, not ssn). So I gave them my first/last name, and address. Paid with a bank card.

Fast forward to this afternoon, when I get a brand new credit card and bill for the Tire Place, with my name and address on the bill (with my middle initial incorrect). Some asshole put 1,000 in car repairs on the credit card, during the 2nd and 7th of July (for those of you who don't know, I was went home to Cincinnati from late June to mid July).

So I call the Customer Service # listed on the bill, which is an automated system, and it asks for the account number and the last 4 digits of my SSN. I put the Account number like it says on the bill and use the digits of my SSN, and the system says it can't find the account.

Is it possible for someone to use a different SSN? Also, I do a lot of online shopping and never had any kind of identity breach, so this makes me pretty suspicious that it's an inside job from someone working at the auto care place.

I've called Transunion and had them put a fraud alert on my credit report, and left a message on the sheriff dpts fraud hotline machine (they weren't available/closed or w/e). Anyone else have something similar happen? What else should I do?

Maybe I'm not following right, you didn't make it clear if the bill that you called the customer serivce # was from someone other than your credit card company. If not, you should definitely call them and dispute the charges as quick as possible. Go through the menus until you get someone real.

    Fucking right they do

But yeah Ceph, the bill from the CC company had the Customer Service number on it, which is the # I had called.

Haven't called the garage, pissed about said charges? It could just be some crooked mechanic, especially if you speak to an owner/manager and show that the only work you had done was on an entirely different car. You could also figure out what make/model/year/color car the work was done on and find it in their employee parking lot.

By the time I got the bill, the garage had closed, or was close to calling, and I also didn't want to call the garage at the time, especially because of how fishy the whole thing seemed.

Just called the Customer Service line again, and I can't get to any representative without inputting correct Account and SSN information.

edit: the school itself isn't bad, but I've always believed you can get education no matter where you go (to a point). Campus is beautiful, but it's always fucking hot.

You said it was a new credit card, was it one that replaced an old one? Maybe it's not updated in their system yet. Try inputting the old (if applicable) and the new numbers. Also I think "account number" refers to the 16 digits on your credit card, maybe the one on the bill is truncated.

It's not replacing an old credit card. They signed me up for one, put charges on it for car repairs, when I was 1,200 miles away. And if I'm getting a bill for it, it should be in their system.

Ohhhh ok, I missed the part that the same place charging you had signed you up for the credit card. Yeah, I'd say this sounds like someone got to your application (an employee of the garage maybe?) and changed some of your info and then made some charges to it. There has to be a way of speaking to someone, maybe call the bank that represents the company? I think there's a fraud hotline for all Visa/Mastercards, too.

    EDIT: yeah, Visa's hotline: (866) ID-HOTLINE
    Mastercard's: 1-800-622-7747 (I think, can't confirm)

I would walk up to the garage, demanding to speak with the owner/manager with the following things:

    a) estimate/invoice from the oil change (highlighting your make/year/model and parts purchased)

    b) credit card bill (highlighting legitimate charge and phony charge as well as correct initial)

    c) any kind of proof you were out of town during that transaction (airline tickets? purchases made in cincinnati on bank/credit statement?)

    d) auto insurance (highlighting the only car(s) you are covered on)

I would then demand to see the invoice of the alleged $1000 repairs and match the automobile details with anything that may be in the lot, and point out it's lack of existance on your insurance/etc.

If it was allegedly for your same car, point out the lack of new parts. Threaten to call the police while you're there, etc.

Blow the place up as you leave.

    Masturbate.

Well I need to go back to FL because I can't afford OOS tuition anymore, so its FGCU or USF.

Depends on what you're really looking for. USF is going to have better parties, and "college" atmosphere, we don't have a football team yet.

But really, you should stay at Cincy, because it's the best the best

This is the best way to get to a human on those automated systems. Just press 0 over and over and eventually it gets pissed and throws you to a human.

Also take in the receipt as well as the credit card and any proof you might have that you were out of town to the garage and complain.

Whatever happened, just call the garage and bitch on them first. So you have a rigid reason to tell the visa/master whatever company that you have "tried to resolve the issue" with them, however "they refuse" to.

You just need these two keyword, then usually they will dispute the charge.
