btw. concerning the alpha version status.

when exhibiting at gamescon (as well as games convention in leipzig), developers and publishers have to submit their version 2-3 months before the event to the Age rating Agency (USK). They test it and say if it's ok or not. At the GamesCom you get various bracelets with colours where the security staff can say if you can enter 16+ or 18+ areas.
So... this FF14 version is 2-3 months old!

The game clearly has a beautiful visual impact and looks appealing.

As a first show tho, I was a little dissapointed. Aside from races 2.0 and the cactuar / marlboro , there was very little to tease FF fans out.
All I saw was a plate warrior, a little mage and an archer, not exactly FF trademarks. I was hoping for familiar things like a DRG, RDM, DRK, SAM, SMN , BRD or anything that could please my inner child.
In the end, one of the reasons I truly enjoy FF XI is its jobs who feel so much different than the average MMO.

Actually Alpha means that the game content is already there "Story-areas-missions/quests etc" But they still got to optimize and polish the game/fix all bugs and glitches/add missing stuff

Once it's done they will run a Beta for a while and according to feedback they will enhance the game again/remove bugs-glitches they didn't notice before etc

Most of the time Alpha->Beta->Enhance takes around a year for mmorpgs

the guy with the great axe looks like a pld to me. 2 hand weapons for tanking would be a follow-up from FF12 (turnesol [sp.], defender etc) and would confirm SEs love for 2-handers

Nothing major I don't think, something about a video being posted later, if it's a new one or not they don't state.

as you can see, this skill-preperation-announcement bar has 2 layer (the one with the 1/4 circle): the front one (red) where you can see the circle blade and a second one that is half transparent (blue). however in the first pic it is greyish-transparent and in the second one you can see that it somehow fills with blue color in the background.
