Final Fantasy XIV @ gamescom 2009 (Updated)

Based on my understand of SE's comments thus far concerning the combat system, this White Knight Story combat video (in HD) seems pertinent:

It's been awhile since I've played White Knight - but each bottom bar represents a combo. When the circle in the UI lights up you have the opportunity to use your combos. You can link several combos together if you time it correctly.

Not sure how similar FF14's system will be but they share the fundamental concept. It's not exactly free-hitting (like you control every swing?) - right? So when you do attack, you're always using a combo or preset attack?

EDIT:

The person playing in the video seems to be a moron. Basically, you can link attacks together. The difference is that in WKS you can still swing automatically I think, but the crux of the combat are the combos in those bars.

One thing I do like about the interface, is that despite there being a lot of information present, it seems fairly minimalist (transparent backgrounds, no big borders on things, etc) so you can appreciate the game environment a bit more.

Not really that important, but did anyone notice if the chat window background fades out? Can't check videos at the moment, due to some weird error with youtube on my work computer that happens periodically.

You can resize/move anything on screen and i'm sure that we will get options to filter chat box/how many lines/how ling till it fade etc from the options just like FF11.

It's the Alpha interface, I'm sure the final product will resemble it in some form, but your gonna have to expect major changes between now and then. Not to mention it will look differently for each localization. So your version may have bigger / small windows.

One of them is a "power bar" and it seems like the higher it is the more powerful your attacks/better accuracy.
