Half of the people in this thread are screaming at the other half to get off their lawns.
Best example I can think of is a SATA+WS macro.
On the topic of "only 10 abilities", besides the fact that we don't know really what that even means, how macros work etc... I've always felt that WOW was very intense with pushing/clicking my action bars constantly. However, as a main tank, I think I really only use about 14 abilities, and realistically, I only NEED about 10 of them.
If the game is designed for you to use 10, then it will be fine with just 10.
Having 10 ability slots adds a new level of strategy, just like in Guild Wars. You had to assemble your spell set with what you were doing in mind. If you were fighting a mage you put more counters and dispels. Bad thing with GW was that you could only change spells at the trainer (if i remember correctly).
I imagine a healer in XIV would put poisona in the bar when fighting poison snakes and stona for cocatrice, while the basic stuff like cures and buffs are left in. A DD would put more high accuracy abilites when fighting birds and slow heavy hitters for dhalmels.
You will probably be able to compose traits and stat boosts as well. As someone already said, just like a BLU. No, I don't think that system will take away either depth or veratility of the player.

Wow I hate it when people try the same shit over 5 times before they realize it doesnt fucking work.
yea they did say that the game will be alot more about strategy
We really don't know how abilities, and especially magic, are going to be split out. It may be that Sneak Attack and Trick Attack come under the one special attack ability slot and you select slot -> trick or slot-> sneak.
For the mages it may be that you don't have tiered spells like Cure I - V etc, but that potency is directly proportional to a magic skill. That would give you more slots.
My unfounded opinion is that for the mages slots will be for magic classes that you have to invoke to use the spell. Otherwise, consult your local blue mage on the spell selection practices.
We do know that the armory system means that weapon selection plays an important role in job selectionand abilities.
We don't know how many equipment slots will be for clothing and bling, and we don't know how they are going to affect anything at this point.
Hey don't know if anyone noticed but that video flashes what I'm guessing is the map of that area.

that would be nice, but Curing using 1 spell sometimes isn't good, for example in bad situation you'd use diffferent Tiers of Cure to keep someone from dying, but if you have only one cure you will have to wait for the delay
but as you said we still dont know exactly how the game works/going to be
saw that before but it seems different, does the map change depending on places you explored ? like FF12 maps will be 'shadowed' until you explore them
More of a comment,
SE saying it will be more about strategy is great. Someone pointed out that the FFXIV keeps track of what direction you are striking the enemy from. That alone opens the game up to many interesting strategies that you simply would not have been possible with FFXI.
I noticed a video, of what i assume is a gladiator, fighting while the camera was positioned in front of the player (not the back side). Forgive me but I dont know the link, was watching it last night at my home pc. This PC is locked up so i cant see that stuff. He was fighting something quite small. The enemy would strike the gladiators knee, the gladiators knee would buckle with the impact. the enemy would strike the gladiators body and his knee would not buckle, instead his body would recoil with the blow. Do you guys notice the same thing? Because it would add a new dynamic to this game, if the location where you are hit has any impact in the game. It seems that it does for enemies, but does it also have an impact when the players are hit? Its very interesting to think about.
I would love to have a game which stays away from button mashing. hehe even in ffxi, id spam the flash/ustu macro from time to time. I do like that "in Que" type of log someone pointed out. that would certainly cut out a lot of the button mashing as you know the ability is coming out asap. Knowing you will act as soon as recast wears is pretty sexy. It would allow me to consentrate on other aspects of the game.
The more i see this game, the sexier it starts to look LOL
In the Famitsu video Tanaka opens up the map and talks about it briefly.
Edit: Also you guys are assuming that Abilities = Spells or individual skills. In FFV they were referred to as Abilities but you were able to select Black Lv6, Time Lv6, White Lv6, the list goes on and on.
Can't wait to hear more details about the battle system, sounds awesome so far. The videos were boring though.
^ lol yeah. Yet another vid of a Lala doing nothing (want to see some mage action). Also after seeing all these FFXIV videos, German looks like such a badass language... at least in FFXIV it does.
EDIT*
new ability/spell
Magegeschoss? Times like this make me feel like I wish I knew German...
