I'm not sure about Wyrms, but Dragons and Wivre do it.
Also, you can break Qutrubs weapons if you deliver a crit from it's side, crits from the back make an Imp drop it's horn, etc.

yeah, running for buffs would be lame. but in one gladiator vid you can see him using shield without moving. so no panic here :D
when i played my very first minutes in FF11, I tried to kill the rarabs at higher positions and i tried to get behind it b/c i was thinking that it makes a difference.^^ something we have now at ffxiv.
i'm sure side- and back-attacking gives something like more criticals or multiple hits (thinking of FFXII... we had some FFXII influences already)

Dude, as a n00b, I was running in circles around bunnies near Sandy because I thought I'd get an advantage lol. About buying a new PC for FF14, something like restoring auto-attack would require a looping script. I'm going to cross my fingers that FF14 will be "windower" or 3rd party friendly, but it's very unlikely. If they want to avoid RMT/botting problems, they're going to have to be like Blizzard and always pose a danger to people using another program with gameguard/warden. I heard WoW's warden is very good at detecting 3rd party programs from what I heard.

I found another interview that was done yesterday by nowgamer, i didnt see it posted anywhere on here. No real new info, but it does state that changing your weapon changes your appearance, including your clothes.

GC09: Final Fantasy XIV Interview | NowGamer
I am SUPER bored, so I decided to do a huge speculation on what we know already

From the interview you found, it says "you skill up that weapon, and you’re going to have a different class. This will allow you to switch classes very easily. When you change your weapon, you can change your class at the same time. This changes your appearance, including your clothes as well." I think it's a little misleading and uninformative compared to other interviews.

Although, there's one important thing to note, and it's the CAN in "you can change your class." I hope that's a direct quote and not something the blogger put in, but it seems true that changing classes would be an option, not forced by the weapon. My main point is... let's pretend it suggests the existence of hybrid weapons that give you access to a hybrid set of abilities. We know for a fact from the Tanaka Hiromichi interview, "Whatever weapon you equip will change the commands you have." This says absolutely nothing about the weapon changing your class/title, but doesn't contradict the suggestion you can have hybrid weapons. For example, gladiator with a normal melee weapon can only use melee abilities, then switch to a stave to cure himself. A gladiator using a hybrid weapon can cast white magic without the need of switching. I think this would one method of filling the void for sub jobs in this new armoury system.

There is another problem, since we're still in the dark about the armoury system. What if classes imposed requirements and limits on what abilities you can choose for the action bar, meaning there would be certain abilities you would have to equip to be considered a specific class? I won't beg the question because in the Tanaka interview, he said "...it depends on how you're going to select your skills and developing your character. So when you reach a certain skill and/or gain certain skills, you will have a title for yourself. It may be Samurai or may not be - we cannot tell you that yet." The how can imply many things, like how you spend time acquiring skills, or how you go about adding abilities to the action bar. Desiring to be a black mage, for example, means there would be a requirement of choosing stone and fire spells and no melee abilities in your action bar. Or, the class title may not have any effect on what abilities you want to use in your action bar, only the skills get determined by the weapon equipped. The class would be available solely by your weapon, as long as you already acquired/learned the skills needed beforehand from leveling.

There's also the case about acquired skills. The gameplay interview clearly suggests you can acquire skills. Does that mean you can get past a weapon requirement to use some skills with an unrelated weapon? Are weapons only for learning skills and to change your class? I think it's clear that weapon will change your class, but can you use skills you've acquired unrelated to the weapon? That just brings up the whole sub-class topic again + the case about acquired skills. I don't know, but the point of hybrid weapons would be useless if acquired skills can be freely used -.- >.> *head explodes*. Still, hybrid weapons could be useful in that case of not having to switch, if acquired skills weren't usable with an unrelated weapon... GAH it's not worth speculating about anymore .

On another note, I'm worried that the interview from nowgamer.com implies the weapon forces you to wear only one set of armor assigned to a class, which I highly doubt. I'm hoping the item system in FF14 will be like FF11's, where you equip whatever armor you want on your head, neck, back, legs, etc., as long as its wearable for your class. It would be super lame if all the classes had the same armor appearance and you could only change the weapon... that would suck huge balls. I know the producers want to please the FFXI fans, so we are going to be able to have half naked Tarus, Mithras, and Elvaans in subligars running around. This means your stave will not force you wear a robe 24/7.

Every Final Fantasy game seems to have its own unique style, but which of the games would you say Final Fantasy XIV is closest to in terms of its art and the tone of its world?

HT: Of course, XIV will be unique on its own, but as to which games its world is most similar to, it could be quite similar to Final Fantasy VI. The machines…the way the world works [in relation to the machines]. That’s something it could be similar to.

    Interesting!

360 version delayed until an agreement with M$ is achieved. Pretty much what i've been thinking. Its in SE interest to have as many subscribers as possible. Having the 360 as the lowest point means thats what the restrictions will be (i'm not saying its going to be terrible just that in a few years it will be there, if it was the PS3 the limitations would also arise just alittle later)

    Can't wait for more info

Actually just finished up that newest interview you linked with 4Gamer.

    Here's the write-up

Some old stuff, but they talk about new stuff as well. The 4Gamer guys try to go into more detail about the stuff SE presented earlier at the convention.

Hmm there was some notable stuff in there. :O

Also, multiple abilities you wish to perform in sequence can also be registered as macros.
Unf I knew it. Rotation spamming.

However, Guildleve will allow players to repeat similar quests to their heart's content.
This is pretty good. Also judging by the guild reward in the picture (2000), assuming this isn't adjusted later on, you may be able to rack up quite a lot of Gil. People will have more ways to farm as opposed to FFXI. This could be good and bad. But of course the equalizer, or the control, to this will be weapon/armor deterioration.

There will be quests that take less than 30 minutes to complete, all the way up to epic missions that span a couple days.
Game days amirite?? lol Even that still sounds pretty hardcore. I like.

While I'm a little upset that there won't be any new races, the character creation looks pretty robust from what we're hearing. As long as I don't log on and instantly see 7 people that look exactly like me; I'm happy.

As always, thanks for the translation Elmer.

Chat box position is weird in this screen... but at least you can place it wherever you wants.

Game looks great for an mmorpg (properly best looking mmorpg so far), it's crazy that during the interviews that they said it will look even better before it get released.

That draw distance.... just wow. Even if they are utilizing that technique that was used in SotC for the draw distance, shit still looks amazing. Those cam shots earlier didn't do the game justice.

I know several tarutaru tanks that this is going to make very happy, if it means what it sounds like.

Ugh, that kind of cleared up some things. Sounds like it's confirmed, you can only equip commands you learned from your current weapon onto the action bar. They're bound to have hybrid (melee/magic) weapons, if they're stressing variety and soloing. I want them to explain how class titles are determined exactly .

"Also, multiple abilities you wish to perform in sequence can also be registered as macros." I like the sound of that.

Looks like I'm going to have to get build a new desktop around the time this game comes out. My Asus G1S-A1 laptop which is 4 GB RAM, Nvidia 8600m GT, Core 2 duo 2.20 Ghz probably can't handle that on the super high settings I want to savor it in. It was a really good laptop a couple years back, but it's starting to show its age. I'm never getting another laptop again for a very very long time cuz that one costed me 2K out of my dad's pocket Xd. I haven't invested in a new desktop for around 7-8 years.
