Your friend is either trolling you or gravely mistaken. I'm sure they are developing for 360 at the moment; but M$ is having issues with letting MMO's on the console so while companies are still co-developing on the chance that they will most likely eventually be put on the platform that doesn't translate to it will be there at launch. The same thing happened with Champions Online.

Xbox live is essentially AOL after broadband. Why would you ever pay to access the internet when you are already paying for internet service?

It costs them to maintain, charging to access them is a return on that.

Aren't steam servers all third party servers? When I used steam for counterstike I don't think I've ever seen an official steam server. Though, I haven't used steam in a loooooong time or have any steam games, so I don't know if they have official servers.

XBL doesn't handle anything for FFXI and wouldn't for FFXIV. It doesn't cost MS anything to let people connect to SE games. MS is just looking to steal a slice of everyone else's pie.

Xboxlive makes the 360 money, plain and simple. That's why it exists.

I won't bother posting it again (it's on this forum's section's front page still), but there was recently a report stating that it was indeed Xboxlive holding up FFXIV, or else it might very well have been a multi-console release day 1. I consider it dumb for anyone to think it's not coming eventually (especially if it's successful), but I doubt it will be on 360 next year at least if Sony PR is to be believed. It might be a long wait.

Umm... yes, you did. Your sarcastic analogy asking why we should pay for WoW and FFXI proves that.

MS wants everything to be handle with XBL Gold so they can get a cut. That is the extra portal you would have to pay for to get access to FFXIV. They tried to do it with FFXI, and they are going to try again with FFXIV.

Sony doesn't have any control over it and they know it. It's all Microsoft's own decision, and at this point it looks like they would rather not risk their plan to make everyone pay for Gold to do anything on XBL.

PR doesn't usually outright lie due to the law issues that can come up (false advertising ect), but they can stretch the truth. Sony PR stated the PS3 would be "the only console for FFXIV in 2010" or something along those lines. I'd be very surprised to see it on 360 next year, but after that I'll be expecting it.

It will come whenever MS decides that they want to let have the same exception for FFXIV they made for FFXI.
