it can be security + keeping new players out of FFXI, or prepare FFXI players for the same bullshit payment system in FFXIV

afterall FFXI is already contaminated by RMT as it is. wouldnt hurt to start this right away for FFXIV and keep everything "as clean as possible" from start.

I was able to register both of my Wells Fargo Debit Card with Visa logo and Visa credit card no problem.

IIRC, trial accounts require credit card info but do not actually get charged, right?

RMT have probably been passing around empty gift card numbers to use for trial accounts. Now those won't work anymore.

I'm guessing RMT will be more than happy to use real credit cards if they have to. My prediction is no long-term impact on RMT, but possibly a short-term impact as they scramble to get some real credit cards. Look for a temporary lull in RMT starting 2 weeks from now, when all the trial accounts that exist now under gift cards have expired.

Also: This change will prevent or impede children from playing FFXI with Mommy and Daddy's stolen credit card, and will prevent the use of stolen cards in general.

As a follow up for the VBV, if the site works for your card all you do is enter the card information, your zip and choose a password. Password is 8-10 long and when you check out of stores a window should pop up for it. That's really as complicated as it gets. It took me about 3 minutes to register.

If your card isn't able to be registered online at the official visa site SE linked then you're going to have a run around, yeah. Our bank (ESB) is retarded as fuck so I'm glad I didn't have to deal with it. My sympathy goes out to the poor souls who do.

The original 30 day buddy/trial codes did, but the 14 day downloadable trial requires no credit information at all, which is what the RMT are abusing for gil tells.

EDIT: The only real 'protection' on the free trial is they limit one key per ip for X hours on the website.... but like that's hard to get around...

Go ahead and try to verify it on POL's site. Has anyone managed to do that yet? After I enter my VBV password, I get this:

ERROR!!Card authentication failed.
For details, please contact your credit card company.

It seems CITIBANK is not part of the verification system. It's not even listed as financial institution on MC site.

My platinum mastercard does not appear on the securecode site. awesome.

Does this now lock me into having to do business with only the credit card companies that appear on "the list" if I choose to continue doing business with S-E. . . I'll dump S-E over my card companies if they decide to enforce retroactive.

The master card logo is also on the POL site info. Check the verification service's list of applicable vendors. Good luck

Honestly I think it's fine. Obviously a little fucked up that their doing it this late in the game, but if this was done before having to play the game originally (Chances are theyre doing this for XIV), this wouldnt be a huge issue.

Just SEs way of making people play by the rules.

Probably not every time you log it, but it's another password you would need to remember potentially every time you are charged for a month of service. Forgetting your online CC password would also be awesome whenever you go to buy something online too.

It's just one more annoying ass thing to deal with.

Everyone should also check with their banks if they have bank cards. Some banks start the verification on their site and tell you to go to the VBV site for account changes only.

Not sure if this was mentionned, but EU aren't affected by this, and I'd guess JP aren't either.
