Why does FFXI run like shit on my work PC?

Well, I installed FFXI on my PC at work. Now I am a graphic designer, so my PC here isn't a piece of garbage, I can run Photoshop and Dreamweaver + Firefox and Outlook with other programs as well at the same time without crashing.

However, once I go into FFXI, it is lag central, 10FPS if I am lucky, and that's in my MH. I am thinking the culprit is Vista... but even my laptop which has vista runs FFXI better, and my laptop isn't all that great.

    What gives?

Here is my dxdiag info for those who are willing to help me solve this issue... it is really driving me nuts. I really just wan't to be able to log in for Einherjar (starts before I get home from work) and not have to take 10 years to get to the zone instead of 5 minutes.

    All help appreciated!

Edit, apparently the file is too big to upload, so I will have to put it here to be a mile long, apologies.

For one, the video card wasn't made for gaming.
Graphics Controller Integrated Quadro 285 2D graphics processor unit (GPU)
    Bus Type PCI-Express
Memory 128 MB DDR (64 MB local frame buffer plus 64 MB of system memory via TurboCache)
Connector Single high-density DMS-59 Flex Connector

Note that it says 128 MB, not GB, or TB, or anything else... 128 is low.

Yeah, I can understand the videocard may suck. However, an old old PC of mine with 64 MB video card ran this 50x better than my PC here. Granted the old PC was XP...

I also thought all the other goodies such as the RAM and processor would make up for the 128ness of my sucky graphics card.

You're also running a low-end Xeon processor which is primarily a multitasking processor (hence it commonly being in server workstations) and not gaming.

To sum it up: It's a work computer for a reason. Not made for games.

Yeah, pretty much what Cephius stated. I didn't see motherboard specifications included but I'd be willing to bet that FFXI, a CPU intensive game above all else, is getting bottlenecked by the combination of MB and uP. Graphics card isn't meant for games either, but with FFXI thats not necessarily a deal breaker. Considering the video cards that were 'top of the line' when FFXI was originally released...

Also being integrated graphics kinda sucks, regardless of the memory size.

Those graphics are actually likely a card (at least, you can get that on a card), they're just -really- bottom of the barrel stuff. The kind of card they put out a couple years ago that has a small pool of it's own memory, and then uses some system memory to supplement it. The one in the OP's machine isn't made anymore, but consider that the 290 or whatever has 64-bit memory bus on top of that.

It's really, really not made for gaming.

Could also have drivers that aren't optimized for gaming - 3D capabilities may be optimized for accuracy moreso than speed.

IMO, that's really the bottleneck. You've got a card that's designed for low cost and low power, and for use in business machines where that's a priority.

The Xeon isn't going to be that big an issue - it's not as high clocked as other CPUs, but you can run FFXI perfectly fine on a 2Ghz P4, much less a Xeon...

That is, assuming that the machine is otherwise fine. I'd assume it would be, but working in IT myself, you'd be surprised...

To the OP...depending on your IT department/policies, you could maybe try getting a better card. Even a $60ish budget board would be far better, or there are some great values to be had in the low $100s or so now (HD4850, 9800GT/GTX). I think those things have like an 800W PSU, so you can put darn near anything in 'em.

It's not really integrated graphics.. kinda confusing when they throw the word integrated in the specs like that. The Quadro line is mainly for workstation & business graphics applications - page layout, graphic arts, CAD/CAM, some CGI modelling, & funky multimedia stuff like supporting X number of displays as a matrix. Even then a NVS 285 is on the low end of the spectrum - 64-bit interface, low on-card memory count, and so on.
