EDIT: Countdowns are not really a bad thing or a good thing. Pick a date to some event and make a timer for it. Same shit. It obviously works, because here is a thread about it creating hype. I would have never heard about it otherwise.

Sorta like how when CoP came out, everyone thought it'd be as good as RoZ was, would make as much of a difference to the game as RoZ did, and add as epic gear and HNMs with as good time vs reward ratios as RoZ did?

Square are allowed to make countdowns for Japan only. It is on a .jp site and it was not advertised anywhere. It's not Square's fault the fans hype the shit out of anything they come up with.

I disagree, I think it looks cool as hell. They can announce whatever they like however they like. I'm not sure why a "mystery countdown" has to be reserved for their big name shit like Final Fantasy.
