I don't know swampy. But I'm told it has to do with the millions of Americans that are uninsured and the thousands of people that die every year because they couldn't afford a simple procedure.

I paid $600 this week in doctor bills, because my wife and daughter got sick. My shitty insurance has a $5,000 a year deductable, that I have to pay into until they will start covering my bills. I'm the only one working, and my job has horrible insurance.

Hang on a second.. that article about NHS is unrelated to the current debate. And before everyone jumps on me, let me explain my reasoning. The reform bill being debated doesn't deal with the standards of care at nursing homes. It's to deal with the cost of health care overall, providing affordable care for those who currently can't afford it, and health insurance reform to stop profiteering and dropping/denying coverage. While all these things do affect nursing homes in some way, it doesn't affect how they operate directly because providing health care for the elderly is just one of a nursing home's many facets - they also act as landlord, recreation director, companion, chef, butler, and so on. Health care isn't even really its primary function - for serious medical needs and emergency/intensive care they defer to a hospital.
