My best friend claims he beat Battletoads once, but I will never believe him unless I see it in person, in one sitting.

Unclear on this one, do you mean beat it the 1st time thru? or in general because i beat it fairly easily at least after tossing controllers trying topast those god awful walls, that was insane timing, granted the game is hard, but i eventually didn't have a problem beating it. other then that area, i wasn't sure why everyone thinks it's some kind of impossibily, and i was 8 years old when that happend.

EDIT: I have beaten it a few times myself but I end up losing after most of the time. I have only beaten the game twice out of many many attempts.

Yes, that is the wall i was just talking about, it took me a 2-3 days to master that shit, i acttualy broke a controller that day (i had another one anyway) because i came close a few times and SLAM! by that very last wall., but i didn't quit till i passed that shit lol, after that it just became a pattern that i rememberd. but to be honest the stages after that, particulaly the ice one, was a pain in the ass to.

Another one that comes to mind is Mario RPG, trying to get 100 super jumps was also annoying, but ended up getting 110 or so after days of trying..

Yeah Battletoads was hard but it wasn't that hard. I used to beat it pretty regularly when I was a kid, and I'll be the first to admit I wasn't the greatest gamer out there.

Maybe it's just how some people see or view it, i played games like that on a normal baises because i enjoyed those types of games, one of my favorites was Tactics Ogre, it wasnt hard but Hell gate was indeed a nightmare at times.
