On-access scanner stopped working w/ Playonline?

Starting this morning, when I launch Playonline, I get the following error (screenshot also attached):

On-access scanner service stopped working and was closed.

I'm running McAfee Security Center on Vista 64 Home Premium on an Acer laptop. I have never had any problems before and I've had the laptop for about 7 months. I made sure McAfee and Vista were both up-to-date and the problem still continues to happen.

I'm running a full scan now with McAfee to see if it finds any viruses.

    Any other ideas?

Update: The virus scan crashes when it hits the Playonline folder. I can't tell exactly which file it crashes on. I feel like this is a very bad sign.

I'm trying some online virus scanners now to see what they can turn up.

The online virus scan (Trend Micro) also had problems scanning the POL directory. It ran for about 8 minutes and then popped up a dialog box saying that installation had failed. After clicking OK it brought me to a page that said it found no problems, but with that error message I don't know if I can trust it.

Next I rebooted into Safe Mode and tried the McAfee scan again. This time it worked. It didn't find anything wrong.

I had been figuring that I had a virus in one of my POL programs but now it seems like that's not the case.

Shouldn't be a problem other than your running McAfee which is only slightly better than norton as being some of the most resource heavy and worst AV programs on the market.

    Nod or kaspersky or nothing.

I keep getting this, as well. And McAfee keeps telling me protection isn't running properly etc. But I use AVG normally.

I am also getting this. It started last night and now I have McAfee has trouble with FFXI.

You can go to the Final Fantasy folder, if you right click there is a scan option. By doing that I was able to nail down at least one file McAfee cant scan:
    FFXi.dll

In the "Event Log" under Applications I get see:
    Exception in McShield.Exe!
    Exception details follow :
    VSCORE.14.0.0.430
    Exception Code : 0X00000000C0000005
    Exception Address : 0X0000000012166DE9
    Exception Parameters : 2
    Param 1 = 0000000000000000
    Param 2 = 0X0000000000000001

    More information :
    ScanRequest : NTName is \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\final fantasy xi\FFXi.dll.

I also scan clean when in SAFE MODE

I think that what's happening is:

    1. AV crashes
    2. Windows and/or your AV program notices its crashed and says "You're not protected"
    3. In some cases, for me at least, it may restart AV automatically
    4. If not, I recommend you start it manually

I wonder what happened with the DLL that was mentioned to cause this with so many AV programs. Perhaps SE will release an update. (lol)

I think it is McAfee that has a problem. More searching through the event log I found:
    This is August 1st
    McShield service started.
    Engine version : 5301.4018
    DAT version : 5694.0000

As of July 30th 2009 it was:
    McShield service started.
    Engine version : 5301.4018
    DAT version : 5693.0000

Number of signatures in EXTRA.DAT : None
Names of threats that EXTRA.DAT can detect : None

So the DAT version changed in the last day or so.. My guess is thats what did it. Or else, we are virused.

Note: I launched POL and did a "CHECK FILES" for FFXI and POL. Both came back as OK!

Just a few minutes ago Mcafee updated to a new DAT version 5695 problem still exists

My wife just got a new laptop and it has the same problem after I started POL.
I'm interested in whatever information can be sorted out.

There is a thread at Mcafee about this problem. The McAfee tech suggested disabling Active protection. This fixes it for me (temporarily) while Macafee works on a solution.

    Thread:
    community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=232690

    1. Open McAfee Security Center
    2. Click on Computer & Files
    3. Click on Configure
    4. Click on Advanced under heading "Virus protection is Enabled"
    5. Click on Active Protection
    6. Un-check box "Turn on Active Protection
    7. Click Apply

Now I can launch POL w/o error.

    Awesome, thanks.
I was looking around and I saw mention of an update file somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

This is the link I found:

8.5i and vista - Mcafee on-access scanner won't start - McAfee Support Forums

I'm not sure if McAfee 8.5i is the same as what I'm running though.

This problem is most easily corrected by disinfecting your system of any/all McAfee products & installing an effective, non-bloatware anti-virus product.

    I recommend Kaspkersky.
