Something else that I don't think have been mentioned yet that i accidentally learned the other day.

If you click on a mob that will agro you, and you look at your minimap, it will have a little radar scanning around it, that's how close you can get to the mob before it will agro you. If it's higher level the radar will be larger, and if it's a scout up on top of a tower, it will be huge.

Those look particularly useful once you get those prefixes in automatic memory for typing.
lol those are almost the same prefixes they used in L2. there was also + for the trade channel, " for whisper, and alliance was $ instead of % (which was a channel for Heroes)

Also the /alert thing has the potential to be annoying as hell. It was in L2 too, but I never saw anyone use it.

As far as I know you have to have htem targeted and then just /emote. Not as well designed as in FF. Also a failed / command goes to chat >.>.

Gathering quests are worth very little exp btw...if your goal is to level to the cap as quickly as possible in retail, most definitely do -NOT- both with any gathering quests past maybe the first. You'll get as much as exp as a gathering quest in ~3-5 kills usually.

Personally, I'd ignore it all, then later go back and level them...then again, if you don't care about being at the top asap, then who cares, do what's fun for ya! I definitely wouldn't put this as a bulleted thing for new players though.

Their exp does suck but it's a good way to make money.

If you set the loot settings that way, then everything under green will be auto-distributed and can be looted by anyone. Lots of groups tend to just go ffa, so the first person to loot gets all the npc stuff. This way it doesn't matter who is first, everything randoms out, and only one person needs to loot. If you are getting quest items like krall marks however, every person needs to loot for those. The checkbox is the key.

I really dislike how a lot of people try to use the roll system if you "need" it. As need is quite subjective, I'd prefer to let everything random just like it did in FF, but I think I'm in the minority. Lost some concentration earrings for my cleric last night to a assassin cuz of that shit...

I will probably shotgun 1-30 at release while keeping my Gathering skill leveled, then go back and level up cooking and alchemy and try and keep them even from that point.

Also for loot rules, watching an Assassin "need" on the Dual Wield Gladiator Stigma that dropped in one of my Krall groups over two gladiators because "I need money" made me want to punch him in the face. I can't stand greedy people. That's one thing I liked about Warhammer, if an item dropped and you weren't the class for the item (say you were a Chanter and some Mage gloves dropped) the most you could do was Greed on it while any Mages could need on it.

I was in a party yesterday and that same stigma dropped, which I could use on my gladiator. I was on my cleric tho so I passed...

Gathering makes me a pretty decent amount of money from gathering up whats required for quests. I would gather the half-dozen or so items required in and around eltnen (snapper, mullet, rhubarb, titanium, horseradish, gold, linen, and star anise). The way the AH sorts similar items that are stackable is by price lowest to highest, then by stack size highest to lowest. So, if you're selling a stack of gold for the quest and 8 other people have a stack of 10 at 20k, sell a stack of 11 for 20k. That way you don't have to accept less money and start an undercutting war, and yours will be at the top of the list so people buy it first. I did find that Adamantium and Platinum are worthless so far in the beta since both are used in lvl 35 gears.

Also if you plan on trying to craft a bunch of leet gears, do gathering. I was hoping to craft myself a set of linen stuff for my SM and found that I needed a few hundred linens (have to HQ a lot of shit to get greens and blues).

I also got my ather gather skill to 160 or so, which was a pain in the ass. Frankly, both were a waste of time, but at least they made good money (the green aether crystals go for 20k each on AH).

Dunno how well known this tip is, I just learned it lol. If you like looking at battle spam, but don't want to lose track of party/alliance chat, you can actually drag those tabs out of the default window for 2 chat boxes.

I believe that's something they took from other MMOs outside of FF, it's a nice way to have things setup like that, or if you want to see your exp/items and your legion/party chat in another window thats also handy.

Prolly EQ which wow stole then now they are doing.

FFXI's window system is them not looking at how MMO's work and doing their own thing which is what made FFXI good and bad at the same time.

While I imagine it's bad somehow I don't think you were really experiencing 2 hour 15 minute delay between responses >_>

I'm not sure if it will help anyone (this didn't seem to work anymore for me on the NA client) but I noticed in caion if I ran windowed and the window was not streched to the edges it would run just as fast as full screen but if I maximized window mode it would lose like 20fps. I foun that I could drag the top and side borders to the edges w/o problems, but if I dragged the bottom border far enough to contact the start bar was when I got the fps hit. Like I said, this doesn't seem to be an issue in my NA client, but it may affect someone out there.

some of these tips may have been already discussed. if so sorry for any repeats.
pulled from Five quick tips for Aion (week 3) - Massively

    1. Quickly search the trade broker
It can get annoying typing out the full name of an item in the 'Buy' tab, especially when the names are all case-senstitive and can be quite long. Here are two quick tips to speed up the process.

    a) If you have an item in your inventory and want to do a quick 'Buy' search to see how much it is selling for, simply ALT + Left Click the item in your inventory and the search bar will be auto-filled with the complete item name.

    b) If you don't happen to have an item in your inventory but know its name, you can simply enter the first letter of each word (capitalized) in the search box. For example, you can search 'T S L J' instead of Thin Soft Leather Jerkin. Some item names share the same initials, so you can narrow the search by adding a second letter in lower-case. For example, 'M W F' will result in Major Weapon Flux and Minor Weapon Flux. If you only want Major Weapon Flux, search for 'Ma W F.'

    2. Advertise your group
Are you looking for a few more people to complete your group? There's actually a way to create a chat link of your current group that might just help with recruitment. Simply click Menu > Community > Find Friend and look at the bottom for the 'Invite Chat Link' button. Initiate a chat message (e.g., Legion, /3 Group, Whisper, etc.), type out your message and then click the 'Invite Chat Link' button to tack your group's hyperlink on to the end of your message. You must put it at the end of your message because the button currently erases all your typed text (bug?). [Thanks Thulf]

    3. Bookmark your rift locations
Rifts are portals Asmodians and Elyos can use to travel to each other's PvE lands, so knowing where they are located is an excellent strategic advantage. Step one: Head on over to Aion Source and copy the code. Step two: Paste the code into your in-game memopad by clicking Menu > Community > MemoPad and then CTRL + V (paste). You may have a character copy limit, so just copy and paste the first half and then the second half in two steps if you run into this issue. Step three: Click a link in your in-game MemoPad to show the location on your map.
