The World Ends With You, if you got a DS and are able to find the damn game these days.
By far the best game I have ever played in my life. Definitely play this game, even if its on an emulator.
Other games that are heavily story driven:
-Suikoden 1,2,3,5 and possibly the DS one although its not as good as others mentioned
-Lufia 1, Lufia the Legend Returns
-Tales of Eternia(aka Destiny 2), Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia. They are in order of my favorites.
-Fire Emblem series
-Red Alert 2
-Jeanne D'arc
-Ico
-Metal Gear Solid series
-Star Ocean 1, 2
-OKAMI <-------------
-Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyrie Profile 1
-God of War series (more action than story but story and gameplay are EPIC)
Maybe it's just me, but I thought the "story" in VP1 was pretty awful. The game itself was fantastic, but the story up until about the last two chapters was for the most part just bits and pieces of history for Einherjar, strewn together with an abysmal translation. I can't believe some of the voice actors actually read that crap aloud.
I liked VP2 a lot better, personally. The whole game felt really polished and I rather enjoyed the story up until the very end (ending sucked bad). The kobold skits in Seraphic Gate were a riot, too.
xenogears, if u havent already. story's amazing
Digging a whole 2 pages back here, but
Infinite Undiscovery was, for me, a terrible game until I forced myself (for the sake of the 60 bucks I spent on it) to like it. The story is about as cliche-driven as possible, to the point that I gave up on taking it seriously and looked at it through a Snakes on a Plane-style 'So bad it's good' lens, which is when I really started to enjoy it. Strangely enough, even though literally nothing changes in the combat system, I felt it went from incredibly boring/repetitive to actually being enjoyable somewhere near the end of the first disc. I love the game, but it was quite a mountain to climb to get there, so I can't say I'd recommend it to anyone else.
Also, Grandia 1 and 2 are probably my favorite rpgs in existence, I can't recommend them enough to anyone, though the story isn't phenomenal, it's more than solid enough to hold the game through for the fuckawesome battle system and fun music.
Lost Odyssey has an absolutely beautiful story to it so long as you take the time to read the 1000 years of dreams, not that the main story is flawed by any means.
Main story was excellent in Lost Odyssey, but the 1000 years of dreams put it over the top IMO. Those were awesome.
Planescape: Torment. I'm surprised I havent seen a mention of this one yet.
Most of this stuff has been mentioned before but I very much liked the story in Fallout 3, and with the 5th add-on just out now, it has a good few hours of entertainment in it for those who haven't started yet.
I didn't really value FPS's before and haven't played many games like that over the years, so when I took up Call of Duty 4 I was surprised when it actually had a storyline, or multiple storylines actually.
Assassin's Creed was also one of the games worth mentioning from last year (or was it 2007?).
Alone in the Dark from last year had an intriguing tale to tell but horrible gameplay forced me to uninstall it before I could see it unfold.
For older stuff and long-time favorites there's Silent Hill 1/2, Resident Evil 1-3, Fallout 1/2 and probably loads more I don't want to brainstorm to remember right now.
