Your thoughts on this HDD?

Anyone ever had any dealings with this HDD before, is it a POS or a half way decent deal. Saw it was 100 bucks with free shipping. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Well honestly, It's probably a perfectly fine drive, but I prefer western digital over Seagates firmware fuckaroo since last year. I'm sure that's fixed now though.

i just got 3 and set them up in raid5, 0 problems so far, but it's only been a week

to clarify, i got them from newegg, but the same drives

I've been running one for months, nary a problem. They are the faster iteration of the .11 drives and I don't believe they were badly impacted by the firmware issue.

Any new ones shipping now will be fine for sure, and they are smokin' fast and very cost-effective.

about 2.8tb after the raid5 is built, i needed to upgrade my music storage, i was running a few external 500gb usbs with mirrorfolder doing a half-assed raid system. i like it so far :]

You'd be surprised how quickly things like BluRay/HD rips and FLAC music take up space.

I threw in my 1.5TB drive after I'd pretty much filled up 2 500GB drives. Deleting the original multipart RAR archives from Usenet after extracting their contents is the only reason I haven't completely flooded 2.5TB.

Still thinking about getting 3-4 more 1.5TB drives and setting up my own NAS with a RAID5 array to simplify things. Can stream audio/video just fine over GigE.

oh no, i understand completely, its just 4.5tb is a lot no matter how you look at it lol, i still remember rockin my 5.25" floppys, and then getting my first "mac" with its massive 40mb drive

Our first PC had 256k RAM, a 20 meg Hard Drive, a 22Mhz 286, and a Hercules video card. The salesman said "you will never fill up this hard drive or need more memory."

The first computer I owned was an Olympia AEA laptop (used the term lightly, since it was a 50lb monstrosity with a ridiculous battery pack that lasted maybe an hour and definately did not fit in your lap) with 1MB (1024kb as read in BIOS - odd that it wouldn't have been 1000, now that I think about it since most HDDs I've ever had were base 10 not base 2) of harddrive space and one of those spiffy green screens, where it wasn't monochrome but it wasn't color either. Major Stryker for hours on that thing. IIRC it also used PC-DOS as the OS. Been a while though.



But yeah, on topic, my personal preference is WD, but you should be alright with that.

Supposedly, seagate's quality has gone down since acquiring maxtor. I don't know how true that is, but it's worth researching if that matters to you.
