Here is an example of my process. I use alpha channels to separate out the various parts to recolor. I did this quick on my laptop while watching TV so it's a little down and dirty but for selection purposes it works.

Look at the channels R G B. Pick one that has substance in the area you want to select. Duplicate said channel. Using the painting and erasing tool delete all but what you want selected Until you have a B&W representation of what you want.

cmd + click your alpha, cmd + j to float your selection to a new layer then cmd +u to open Hue and Saturation and select colorize and slide those sliders. Duplicating your layer and adjusting the mode and opacity from there. Always leaving the original layer and channels untouched

Oh, nice job on all the recolors, Rowe.

I'm hoping the actual in game custimization is a color slide bar/palette similar to Perfect World. I would go for something between two recolors you've already done.
Face of this one: Mithra alt copy
Hair color of this one: Mithra alt blue
Although I really don't like that hairstyle, never did. Atleast it looks a lot better this time around. Before it just looked like the Mithra's eyebrows grew up into their hair. I used a dat mod in XI that was a combination of three hairstyles. I don't really have a -good- screenshot of it. Ponytail from one, front ponytails from another, combined with the spikey bangs/long back of my main hairstyle. I can't remember face numbers anymore.

I'm also wondering if maybe the nose coloration is an option, as well as the stripes. The picture Fawkes posted is perfect. Just a little bit on the tip.
    Something like:
    Stripes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    Nose: Yes/No

Guess we'll see when it comes out!

I always liked the character customization from Phantasy Star Online / Universe. It wasn't as in depth as some, such as Aion or City of Heroes, but it still allowed you to make your character to look how you wanted without looking like everyone else. I think the biggest failing for the character creator in FFXI as the lack of face options, and since that's what really makes your character, at least to me, I would like to see more focus on that.

The only thing I would really say a slider would be really required for would be height, weight, and boobs. Everything else could really get away with choices, as long as there are a lot of them.

    Head
Hair Color / Hair Style / Eye Color / Eyebrows / Face Shape / Facial Features (Freckles/Scars etc) / Racial Features (Ears for Elvaan, Nose/Ears for Mithra, Beards for Galkas, etc)

    Body
Fitness (Athletic or Body Builder or just Skinny etc), Boobs(Girls) / Muscles (Guys) / Hips / Waist / Height / Weight

I think that's pretty much the basics without getting too into it. Some people say you don't need a boob slider but I think it's important, it makes everyone happy. That way guys who play their female characters can have their massive racks other people can have their body shapes without everyone having to settle for the same thing they may not be happy with.

    Thanks for the recolors, Rowe.
The blonde Miqo'te went on my wall earlier today.<3
Personally I'm going for a blonde Miqo'te with light brown eyes, brown ears and tanned skin. Hopefully it'll be possible.

After seeing Aion's character making process, things like this don't seem too farfetched. However my problem with things like height is how people make joke characters and take it to the extreme.

Guild wars for instance. Everyone is the same race and then all of a sudden some 3ft char runs past you and force /facepalm.
This is of course, if you mean a height slider and not just pre-set S, M, L like XI had.

If they allow boob adjustment capabilities, I expect it will be very easy to tell who is a male playing a female and who is a female playing a female.

I dunno I'm a guy and if I had a choice on boobs I would keep them no bigger than they are in FFXI lol they get in the way.

Boob adjustment probably won't happen, it would interfere with the presentation of the armor. Most other MMOs players often look like they are running around in sweat suits with some junk stapled on here and there. SE designs some nice armor and they don't want to compromise their designs.

That's why I like being a male character the armor they do is amazing. I played WoW for a little bit with my roommate and he was a female Death Knight and he looked like a really bad stripper lol SE should take pride in Armor and weapons.
