PS3 Slim + Price Cuts!? (Aug 18)

For a good 20 minutes my blue ray drive wasn't showing anything, DVD or game (I don't own any actual blue rays aside from the games themselves), then when it popped up after a restart, Drake's fortune crashed. Also the new infobar you can't turn off is really fucking annoying.

Yeah, Drake's fortune is crashing randomly at different locations regardless of HDD/rendering activity. This is really pissing me off.

Really? From what I've heard a lot of people seem to enjoy it.

Press the PS button while playing a track. As far as I know it has always been like that, unless you mean something else?


I quite like it personally, the only thing that will take a while getting used to is the bigger font... But being able to see how many messages/friends are online in the infobar is neat. Dynamis themes are nifty, and there are a ton of new options in the settings section. I actually like the friend list layout, being able to see what games they are playing without highlighting them, dunno about the grey background around them though. Other little things they added like having it show you connection download and upload through the connection test now is cool. Video playback has been improved with the right analogue sticks new features. And from what I remember reading they made the font bigger due to customer feedback, people complaining it was too small, lol ehh, I'll get used to it.

No, I meant like using the browser, or checking a message, when I hit the PS button it asks me if I want to quit playback.

Maybe I overreacted a tad. I was in the middle of a fight earlier and running through between cutscenes when Drake's crashed earlier. Got through that part with no difficulty now.

I still dislike the forced ads, out of the way or not.

Go in to system settings and turn it off, and it won't show it on start up (I'm assuming you mean the What's New section?)

Ah, nevermind now, problem solved, was my only real issue with the update.

I never disabled that previously, so I have hardly notice it. Not all that annoying really, do like the # of people online they added however.

You can still browse XMB while playing music, I read that you have to have music output set to 48Hz in order for it to work properly. That seems to fix the issue for most people.

Originally I kept it up since it was somewhat useful (Ps3 system tips with the occasional ad or so.) Now it's just PSN spam and it's just slightly irritating.

so the slim isn't backwards compatible? I'm raged and not getting one now. Hmph.

Where did you read that the slim WAS backwards compatible? That's never been said other than people saying they hope for it.

It has full PS1 emulation though. (And can still make PS2 memory cards i nthe XMB, lol.)

PS3 slim has no BC, I would recommend trying one of the following if you want to play PS2 games in 1080p.

The 80GB is very temping, my friend has had his Motorstorm bundle since day one and it's still running strong, can play all of the best PS2 games (he owns and tests them all), and is actually cheaper than buying a PS3 slim.

Yep yep, definitely going to have to go after one of those instead of a slimmer PS3 (as if my Xbox 360 isn't huge enough for space taking). However, I really don't trust Gamestop much anymore, since they just LOVE to sell you untested used games with scratches, semi broken Rock Band/Guitar Hero gear, and shoddy periphials-- who knows how that would extend to a refurbished system.

I'll save these links however, and take a run at Amazon and E-bay for research as well. Many thanks man!
