I'm way behind on my consoles, so I have a couple of questions.

I've never had, nor used, an X-Box, X-Box 360 or PS3. The only "new" console I have is a Wii, which is pretty straight forward.

1: Will a PS3 play PSX and PS2 games?

2: Will a PS3 play regular (non Blue Ray) DVDs?

3: Are all PS3 consoles Blue Ray?

4: How much HD space do I really need? I plan on at least trying FFXIV. Even 80 GB seems like it's overkill for a video game console. Does anyone come close to using that 80 GB, or beyond - making the 160 GB model desirable? If so, what uses up so much HD space?

5: Is a PS3 a "good" blue ray player? In my experience PS2 wasn't a very good DVD player, and sometimes locked up.

6: Is PS3 a functionally sound console (360 has it's "rings of death", thick PS2s had lots of issues with disc read errors)?

7: Any other "neat/useful" things it does (for instance, Wii can go on the internet, but isn't very good at it)?

8: Anything else I should know before buying a PS3?

I already paid for the game, why do I have to pay the game's price again in full just to get bonus stuff that should have already been included with the game?

Well, I'm only on chapter1, so idk which characters already are in this game, but since you can only send out 10 characters per battle I doubt the lack of DLC will be much of a loss.

All PS3s have PS1 backwards compatibility, while only some models have PS2 backwards compatibilty.

All PS3s can play DVDs.

All PS3s have to play blu-ray, as all PS3 games are printed on blu-ray discs.

Lots of games have optional or mandatory installs that take up anywhere from 500MB to 5 GB. Also, DLC and PS Store games take up some space. 80GB is probably sufficient if you're just playing games.

PS3 is the best blu-ray player.

PS3 has a very rare defect that Sony makes you pay to fix. Emphasis on very rare, xbros like to exaggerate it because they're sore about RROD (they even termed it the "yellow light of death").

Uh, Folding@Home/Life with PlayStation, it has a decent internet browser, you can play PSP over the internet by linking it to a PS3, and apparently some people like PlayStation Home. Also, you can play import titles without a modchip.

The earliest models had the actual Emotion Engine chip PS2s had. They removed those to cut costs, and the next couple models had software emulation. All current production models don't even have that. If you want a PS3 with backwards compatibility, you'll have to go through a whole eBay rigmarole I don't feel like explaining. Google it.

Yes. The PS Store sells movies, episodes/seasons of TV shows, and games that are stored on the PS3's hard drive. The video content is 720p or 1080p so the files can get pretty large.

The PS3 will actually let you install your own hard drive up to like 500GB.

Original 60gb and 20gb launch models have hardware backwards compatibility, where as the 80gb MGS bundle and the PAL 60gb launch model has software compatibility. Models in current production have no PS2 bc.

Yes and it also has an awesome DVD up-scaler that works very nicely.

The only models in production are the 120gb Slim model, and the 80/160gb fat models (Actually I'm pretty sure the fat models have been discontinued and the ones on sale now are just the ones still in stock.)

When blu-ray first come out, it was the best one you could find, as it was one of the only ones that supported BD-Live and was connected to the internet, so it could receive firmware updates. These days there are blu-ray players with the same function, but it still ranks as one of the top players.

The earlier models, most specifically the launch ones are the highest prone to receive the yellow light (mine did, and I had to pay $150 to get it replaced as I was out of warranty), although it is rare. The newer models most especially the slim use a LOT less power, and give off a lot less heat, so I'm sure that problem has been eliminated.

On top of what priran said, there is a Video Store where you can rent or buy both SD and HD movies. If you live in the UK, you also get VidZone and BBC iPlayer and PlayTV functionality which is awesome. The remote play function with PSP is highly underrated, and with the right settings you can access your PS3 with your PSP from anywhere in the world (assuming your PS3 is hooked up to the internet.) and you can stream anything off of your PS3 hard drive like movies, audio files, and you can even play some PS3 games that are compatible.

8: Anything else I should know before buying a PS3?

Nothing really, it comes with pretty much everything you need, controllers recharge themselves through the PS3 USB, online gaming is free, hard drive is upgradable with any 2.5" laptop HDD which is handy, built in wifi etc.

The only thing it doesn't come with is a hdmi/component cable and a headset, so if you want those, you'll have to buy them separately. Pretty much most bluetooth headsets work with the PS3 also.

I'm leaning heavily towards getting a newer model, although I'd like the PS2 compatibility - but really only for FFX, FFXII, KH & KH2 replays - which could be in a month, a year, or never... who knows. If nothing else, I can just store my PS2 in my closet until then.

the colors look great but $150 is alot. Sucks that even though NA buys the most Ps3 we don't get alot of the reskin that we see in japan. Anyone here got a diff color Ps3? I was able to get the MSG4 gunmetal Ps3 and i love the color.
