It's really not so bad, because unlike the 360, the PSU is built into the console itself so you're not carrying around another brick

So specifically, a Radeon Mobility HD5470 would be ok?

    GT 240? GTX 260M? GT 325M?

I feel foolish asking, but I really have no choice.

All of them are fine. SE said all you'll need for a GPU is one that can do DX9.0c and has 512MB of VRAM. Like XI, XIV is more CPU oriented.

Well, personally, I think the 240 is a bit on the underpowered side, but overall, it's the best price/performance GPU I believe for Nvidia.

I would definitely wait a bit more if you plan for a mobile rig. Laptop industry has quite a few new models slated to hit before the end of the year.

Eh, it is? It seemed like the videocard takes a pretty significant share of the load from what I saw.

I heard and saw a pic that it hovered around 15% for the 5870? Or was it the 5770?

That's really not much, especially for a stunning game like XIV. It could be just a driver issue, but the way SE talked about the video requirement, the GPU is 2nd.

Animation/physics, & engine optimization is near-non existent currently. I'd wait you know, a few months before jumping the gun.

29FPS in Dynamis max settings with a x1800 XT 512MB. And just for good measure before I quit, same thing with my 5770. Drivers do the body good.

I saw some pics around here somewhere that the alpha was only taking around 23% on each of two cores. I need to try to find them.

Or better yet, somebody tomorrow, please run a logger and keep an eye on CPU resources and GPU resources. I really doubt that with the fairly high minimum GPU requirement and working along nvidia that they wouldn't be using GPUs efficiently. Optimization with various cards and specs haven't been tweaked with either, so we should probably wait until at least phase 2 beta before judging it, I think.

True that. The pic I saw, the user may have been limited by his CPU, being the reason why his GPU wasn't taking a bit more load.

SE may not be the greatest when it comes to optimizing their games for the PC, but they should have realized by now that the GPUs are much better at pure processing perspective. Lets hope they took that in account when developing Crystal Tools.

That's not really true in general. It was the case with FFXI though - since it was basically run on a PS2 emu, and emulators are by nature mainly CPU dependent. Lots of S-E games on PC run just perfectly fine and are not screwed up like XI was.

If by PC games you mean VII and VIII, it really wasn't a big task to optimize them for the PC. Even back then, the average PC could easily emulate the PS1 if it wanted to. And they did still have their fair share of problems, most notably the glitches in the CGI scenes. But that's a different topic.

The only real, fully developed SE game for the PC to have come out after XI was just Last Remnant. And that game, right at the start, had bugs all over the place.

Other then that, most of the other SE PC games aren't developed by them, but a subsidiary or outsourced and stamped with the SE label. So, yeah, SE still needs to show the world they can become a capable developer for the PC. And XIV will be their show case.

The Last Remnant had bugs? I thought it was much better optimized to PC than it ever was to Xbox.

It was, especially when compared to the 360 version, but it still had problems of its own. Most of them were minor and not game breaking, but they were there. Like a particular monster you engaged, then it would disengage for some reason and the only way to engage it again if you engaged a different monster then came back to it lol.

Plus, SE used a modified version of the Unreal engine, which we all know is one of the big, standard ones to use for PC development. XIV though, uses Crystal Tools. Their very own creation. This is SEs show case to the world that they can be a powerhouse PC developer.

Yeah, that picture with the 15% GPU load was him staring at a wall. The one above is a lot better.

Regardless of what is or is not complete, I can't really see them pushing this out for one set of hardware for the alpha and then basically saying "screw you guys, we're upping the requirements."

I suspect that while it may not be complete yet (even though it looks great so far), what is available now is likely what will be required in 6 months down the line. Its foolish to think that they'd be developing XIV on one generation of GPUs and then deciding they will require you to use another. That is why I am asking now, because I'd like to believe that what we have available to us now is going to be sufficient to run the game in 6 or so months down the line when it goes retail. Sure, new hardware is going to run better, but that isn't exactly the point.

As I've said before, I'd love to just wait until closer to release to get something that will fit the bill, but that isn't realistically going to happen for me. I scrape by as it is, so I need to purchase now-ish when I get my student loans straightened out, as I certainly won't have any of that left in 6 or so months.

Didn't they already say the full game will generally require less to run, since it'll be better optimized and let you actually fiddle with graphical settings?
