I'm getting major lag in alpha. I know some people have 25+ fps but I'm getting fps in the 8-10 range. :<

I'm just wondering if it's my PC or just alpha. Any input would be greatly appreciated. ^^

    My specs:
    Dell Studio XPS 8100
    Windows 7 x64
    Intel i5 @3.2GHz
    8G RAM
    Radeon HD 5450

I really hope it's not my PC because I have no clue how to install GPUs but I have a feeling I'm going to need to learn. >,<

    Thanks in advance

GPUs are the easiest to install really. Also what else did you run along side FFXIV? No real personal experience with Dells since I tend to build my own PCs so I'm not sure if Dells make good gaming rigs or not.

Prebuilt pc's tend to have alot junk running on the side (antivirus, "hud" quick button stuff, alot eye candy turned on, net security junk etc etc) >.>

also the.. Radeon HD 5450 is on the looowww.... end of the video cards "speed scale" (like old enough its slower then video cards from 2006-2007 range)
Might be why low on the fps.

cpu's ok I guess, but that video cards really got to be causing the bad fps for sure.

Yup change the GPU for either a 5850 or 5870, a 4870 would be better than what you have at the moment minus the DX11.

    OK thanks :D

I completely wiped the Dell before I used it haha. I was just running Fraps with 14.

Do you think I'll need a low profile GPU for my Dell studio? Guess I'll have to look it up myself or take a peak inside. yikes!

    thanks again ^^

Dells and other pre builts usually come with shitty PSUs. If you're going to go with a beefier GPU, there's a good chance you'll need a new PSU too.

Also to add, depending on the model. Certain cases (XPS 410) for example uses a proprietary size. Unless you wanna go with dremeling the case or creating an adapter made out of aluminum, its going to cost you. (PC Power & Cooling sells custom PSU's but they are not cheap.)

heres my specs I get a solid 21 FPS with some noticable lag when in areas such as aetheryte camps.

    PN5-E SLI MB
    Intel QQ6600 @ 2.40 MHz
    Windows 7 Prof. 32-bit
    4Gb DDR2 RAM @800 MHz
    500Gb 7200 RPM Maxtor HDD
    750w PSU

    Diamond Raedeon HD 5770 1Gb PCI-E

your bottleneck is def your video card, I just upgraded my card cause a friend is letting me play alpha.
Befor this card I had nVidia 8800 GTS 320mb card and after changing to the new one a couple games I played ran exceptionally better, Metro 2033 I could not play on med-high graphics, and now I can play smooth as butter on high graphics.

Yep seems like it has a 350W psu.
Would a HD 5770 and a 550w psu be an ok combo for the longterm? I don't really want to be spending so much this year but I want it to last. I did some googling and most models fit this particular dell case. phew!

With the new Nvidia cards just out is this the lowest we'll see the 5800s this year?

A good brand 550W will do yes, and as for the price drop... I'd say they happen every few months... shit moves really fast.

At http://thermaltake.outervision.com/index.jsp you can calculate how much you'll need.

550w sounds like a bit of an overkill, not that I know much though.

There is a small chance we might see the 6000 late this year but its unlikely to be honest.

There is a dual core 5970 but its big money.

550w is overkill? Whoops, my 1k must be extreme overkill, but most of it is needed with my SLI and hardware.

I think her question was more "will the 5800s get cheaper later this year?".

58XX won't be cheaper this year unless...!

    1. Nvidia lowers prices on their cards, making ati follow with price lowering.
    2. The rumor's of ati releasing 6XXX series in 2010 is true (supposedly somewhere in Q3-Q4 2010) which will drop 58XX prices.

Other then those 2 "possible" things, you really won't see a price drop

Nvidia always come up with newer version of their very same GPU using less power / less expensive to produce. Usually they drop the price on the former ones, I'd expect price drops both with ATI and Nvidia at this point.

Ok I'll probably go with a 5770. I have a feeling I'll end up breaking something else if I go any higher.
Supposedly some people ran a 5770 with 350w but I don't think I'll chance it.

    Thanks everyone! <3

^ I'd go with a 5830 if its not too much more. its about on par with a 4890 but better efficiency and DX11 features.

the 5770 is pretty entry level for a gaming card and you likely won't be satisfied.

Because it uses Unreal Engine (3? aka olde.) and it is terribly coded.
