the 5770 is pretty entry level for a gaming card and you likely won't be satisfied.
you have no udea what your talking about, if you dont want to spend too much the HD 5770 with 1gb mem is more than enough to sutably run XIV and MOST other offline NEW generation games at high settings. I bought one for $150+tax new and that was a great price for the preformance boost, I only wish I had the dough to pick up a second one at that price. also its able to run 3 monitors at once, has HDMI and DVI ports which was a must for my new card.

it's still look better then FFXIV. If your machine can run it, you should be good for FFXIV.

Just because it looks better than FFXIV (Alpha mind you) doesn't mean it's a good benchmark. It's a completely different engine optimized for completely different setups. It's one of the reasons why FF11 sucked so badly on the 360. It wasn't made for it even though you can easily argue that a lot of 360 games looked a lot better than 11.

precisely, if it looks better and coded like crap it means its more demanding on your pc right? so... if you can run it you should able to run ffxiv. unless im missing something. and one thing they have in common is both are build for PC, diffent engines or not.

I duno, I just downloaded and ran the benchmark and it looks pretty bad, textures are some of the worst I have seen in a long time.

There is no reliable benchmark out yet, unless you do want to test your console then just go play FF13, that's the only game running same engine.

Until then... just base your PC assumptions around /recent/ engines.

I would say that graphics wont be a real issue. Server location, latency, responstime and network coding will.

I wouldn't ask myself: can my computer handle the game?

Instead: can the servers handle the stress?

Thats not something we can influence though, I'm curious though what the bandwidth cap they are using, looks almost the same as FF11 which is 56k lol.

Perhaps they are recycling the old 11 servers from the recent server merge, yikes, might explain why the Alpha servers have been so unstable.

I thought those were PlayOnline servers and SE was using new/seperate ones for FFXIV?

56k cap is unlikely if for no other reason that they'd be widely ridiculed for doing so.

I'm not too worried about the latency/stability issues that people are having. As a hypothetical, imagine you're rolling out FFXIV and you estimate that 20 physical servers will be needed for one "world," and you'll need 30 worlds at launch. So you order up 600 servers, and you have them sitting in front of you, ready to test. When you run the alpha, you don't use all 600 servers concurrently; you use only 20, and try to get your alpha world to run smoothly. Iron out the bugs in alpha, then, and you iron them out for the full game.

Disclaimer: all numbers completely pulled out of my ass for the sake of making a point.

    I have this setup:

    Win7pro 64bit
    Intel i7 920
    Kingston 6gb DDR3 1600mhz triplechannel
    Sapphire HD5970
    Corsair 750psu

Does someone with a setup close to mine, already played the alpha? Am I ok to play XIV with the max settings on a 1920x1080 monitor?

The majority of the gamers doesn't have an "awesome" pc, so I wouldn't be too worried if you can play it or not. If the developers write the gamecode correctly the game won't ask a lot from your pc.

yep its true that the majority of gamers dont have an "awesome" PC, depending on your def. of "awesome", that is.

Sure the newest games cannot push the limits of technologically available hardware too much because then no one would be able to run them, but I can assure you that XIV will indeed require more specs than you might have thought.

    sure, at 800x600 with 0xAA and 0xAF (I'm ribbing you a bit)
5770 isn't a terrible card, but its about what a 8600GT was back in its day compared to the 5870, 5850 and 5830 which is to say entry level.

but i do take back my reccomendation for the 5830 in light of its MSRP being within spitting distance of the 5850, I was under the impression it would be a ~200$ card at most

well I upgraded from a 8800 GTS card so no its much better than the 8600GT, and compared to the cards that have a starting cost $300-$500 and the preformace I get in FFXIV I can take video and play at solid 21FPS I say this card was worth the $150 price tag!

because the 8800gts is roughly on par or somewhat slower than a 4850

I wasn't saying that the 8600GT is a good card or that the 5770 isn't when compared to it.

What I was saying is that compared to the other (current) 3d accelerator cards on the market, the 5770 is entry level.

Along the lines of, sure my olde 4870 is pwnsauce compared to the 9800pro I was using when I started playing FFXI (not that it made that much of a difference in FPS )

Why do we care what 'level' the card is?

The only important things are that you can afford it and that it can do what you need it too.

The 5770 is a good card in its price range, if you can afford a better card more power to you.
