I think I've been pretty clear about my purpose. I've even said that I'd recommend a 480 to anyone as long as they're sure they've got a suitable case for it in terms of ventilation. I don't recall having said they all run > 105C all the time, or that they're all going to overheat and melt your face off. If there's nothing particularly over-the-top about the GTX480 heating issues, why would some of the first run cards come with a warning not to handle the card immediately after use?

Someone buying a 480 sticks it in their stock Dell toaster housing featuring a handful of 3/16" holes drilled into the left side access panel as its primary means of ventillation, they're going to wind up disappointed with the performance of the card. You and I know it wouldn't be the card's fault...it would be a novice user putting a hot running card in a case with thoroughly inadequate airflow. Hence my warning...airflow good, yes?

Win7 64-bit link to the current version of the public release, .75. Which(again) is exactly the same as .55, except with tweaks for the All Points Bulletin beta.

Ah, thanks for clearing this up. I wasn't sure what the changes were; 197.13 was fucking me over in starcraft 2 beta, wanted to make sure I have a version that worked (.45 does, but now I have a new bug that I don't know what is causing it - comp crashes on game quit unless logged out of b.net - but that's a topic for a different forum).

yeah that a BETA problem not driver issue haha (i am haveing the same issue)

Aside from that, I think its prob best if everyone that is upgrading now just ...um WAIT for ffxiv to release specs before you upgrade. That way you'll get the price reduction in that due time and you'll get better drivers and possibly better versions of the products.

    just sayin ^^b

Agreed, by the time FF14 is out Radeon 6000's should be close if not already out on the market.

And the revisions for the Fermi architecture. There's no point into upgrading now for XIV as the game is still months away.

Definitely true. I only upgraded because I had to, as my current hardware was dying/going bad.

quick question, is the 5970 or the 5870 the better card? i been on nvidia for a while and now i am trying to decide whether or not i go back to ATI for my next card, (i only really ever run one card as that's been more then adequate for me use). Looking towards an updated gtx480/470 or a 5870/5970 for the next card unless ati drops something new before then and vice versa for Nvidia

5970 is faster, but microstutter is a major problem for me.. so I'd get the 5870 if those were the only two choices and price wasn't a factor.

I had never heard of microstutter before so I checked out this link [H]ard|Forum - Microstutter

It seems to only apply to Crossfire/SLI rigs. If you only had one card would you recommend the 5970 over the 5870?

The 5970 is a dual GPU, so it is running Crossfire. It's basically two 5850's slapped together on a single card.

Yep, the 5970 is basically like the 9800GX2. Just two 8800GTs stuck together. And believe me, I do get micro stuttering on my 9800GX2 on some games.

Because they're seldom an improvement, often worse and lag behind the official releases for obvious reasons. Not to mention that the official version + Rivatuner is damn near the same thing. Those things are more trouble then they're worth.

The 5970 suffers from the powervirus because of heat/voltage issues, unless you plan to strip the card and redo the cooling you would be better off getting 2 x 5870.

I just wanted to give my input regarding GTX 470 temperature.

I'm currently running one with a I7 930 and temp will never go over 90C. This is with the fan on AUTO. Fan won't go over 65%.

I've played manually with the fan speed since i wanted to get the temperature a bit lower. At 75%, the temperature never went over 80C.

This is while playing BFBC2 for a couple of hours.

I've got the EVGA GTX 470 Superclocked.

A few weeks ago I was talking about having money accessible to me shortly, that I won't have available near launch.

I've decided that the best road for price and performance is going to be the Asus G73 series of fun stuff.

As such, this is what I am looking at. Comments?

You could build a PC at least 4 times faster for that kind of money.

That can be said almost every time you're looking at laptops, but not everybody needs/wants a desktop.

I need portability. Space is a major concern for me, I don't have space for a desk for a desktop.

I'm fairly certain Celeras knows that as well, but I know for myself that when people say/imply the words gaming and laptop in the same sentence, I cringe. For the most part, you can find a desktop to suit your 'mobile' gaming needs that will be cheaper and serve you better.

Why do you need a desk for a desktop? I don't have one. When you say portability, do you mean you need to be able to take it from point A to point B, or that you need to be able to move it around your house? If the former, use a LAN party case, if the latter, stop being lazy and do a little research. If you actually want to play while in motion... I seriously have to ask how you intend to do that. Your internet connection will not be good enough to put that machine to use. You do not need a large desk to have a desktop, and you will honestly be better off with one than a laptop used for gaming, as you can't upgrade it and the gaming ones almost always suffer from heat and driver issues.
