Not even worth it for him. He's running the abysmal Pentium D. Pairing up any current gen GPU with that crap of a CPU would be pointless.

Hmm, I'm not an expert at all, but I do know that those Nvidia cards don't necessarily go in numerical order. This chart will probably give you a good idea of where the different graphics cards stand:

I know I've posted it before, but the issue keeps coming up.

9400 is 1 GB not 512 is it still that low on the list? o.O

also is there a way to benchmark the 9400 vs the 9800?

edit 2: Nvm found it but im still not sure how big of a difference it is

edit 3: is PNY a good brand?

edit 4: found ones that i like

    XFX Radeon HD 5750

do I need a certain power supply or something for it though?

A simple 550w PSU will do, though I'd add 20$ and get a 5770 since its 10% better and I read that 5770 was doing 20fps and for me any less is irritating to watch.

my power supply is only 375W how bad would it be to put in the graphics card with that?

Also where I'm looking its a 40-50 dollar difference mind telling me where you get your prices maybe i'm looking in the wrong places

    http://computershopper.com/graphics-...radeon-hd-5750

says it only draws around 86 watts when working in full load but im not too sure of all this lingo

    edit:

    http://computershopper.com/graphics-...radeon-hd-5750

says 86 again to confirm and that 5770 draws more power

    edit 2: its actually lower than the 9400 GT's power consumption even the 5770 is lower than 9400 GT's apperantly <_<;

Again...pairing up a current mainstream GPU with the Pentium D is a complete waste of time and money. Please tell me you're at least looking to upgrade the CPU as well.

You need to pair the GPU with a decent CPU to get the most out of it. You're currently bottlenecked by you GPU, but if you go ahead with this, you'll be severely bottlenecked by your CPU then.

The Pentium Ds are worthless pieces of junk. The Athlon X2s kick their ass. And Core 2 Duos kick the X2s ass. And at minimum, for the 5770, you're going to want a Core 2 Duo or the equivalent AMD.

    google
    benchmark 9400 vs 9800
should be able to find one eventually.

If you want to have a guess on how well your system will do vs others, you can always look at this thread and see what people are saying their fps is ingame (hopefully the post their cpu/video card etc etc) and go off that should give you an idea of what your pc can do.

Like blue was saying, you really want to look at basically a new setup. For reference, I have a system pretty similar to yours, but it's a regular P4 (yours actually has 2 cores I believe) with an 8800GT (quite a bit ahead of your 9400). However, I wouldn't dream of trying to actually play XIV on it. I have installed it on there but have not had a chance to try the alpha out on it. To compare, I also have a core duo (the bastard generation before the popular core 2 duo) and a 4870 radeon. It is worlds better than the P4 system, but still struggles in the alpha with people around, and is in general a semi-budget system from like 2 years ago.

I'm have no idea how to mess with a computer so I usually buy from dell website so I wonder if this will run FF14 decently? I got 1.5 grands to use from my saving. From what I've read that make some sense to me is that the Radeon 5870 is good but I'm not sure how about the others. Is this worth it or should I just stick with ps3? :/

    Studio XPS 9000
    i7-920 processor 8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 4 DIMMs
500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 (worth it?)

    Studio XPS 9000
    i7-920 processor 8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz - $280
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 4 DIMMs - $30x4=120
    500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive - $85

    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 (worth it?) - $400
Add in case(100) powersupply(100) motherboard(100) (bet none of them from dell are this expensive)
1.2k assuming dell put in decent options of the above
If you have 1.5 grand and are not buying new monitors you could make a system 3x better than the one dell offers (aka similar to the alienware dept of dell). Do you know the games from when you were a baby? Put yellow star into yellow star shaped hole, etc? If you did well with that you can build your own pc.

If you need help you can go to newegg.com and look at people's "wishlist of pc" and it shows you the current price of everyone's rig. If you just want to do it all yourself then the smallest amount of research will find many guides to follow. (aka its a checklist of the pieces you need so you dont leave anything out).

If you want to buy a 1.2k (maybe) computer from dell for 1.5k that is fine too.
However, if your the kind of person that keeps breaking your pc with mal-use then you might want a company warranty

if you seriously want to take the build your own route, pop into the tech forum and make a post.

Villan, I have an HP computer and I've only been buying HP for my entire computer-owning life. Here's what I'd choose if I were in the market for a computer:

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/series/ca...owse1/home_SDP
right now, they are offering free upgrades with 1TB HDD and 9GB RAM. If you don't want to visit the link heres the stats:

1,099$ for tower no upgrades (but the HDD and memory upgrades are free anyway for now)

Heres "my" upgrade preferences stats if you are going to buy click "customize and buy" and follow the options, my list goes in order. Or you can buy it how it comes, but dont forget to add on the free upgrades!!

PRICE with my upgrade pref: 1,099

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-930 quad-core [2.8GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache]
    FREE UPGRADE! 9GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [5 DIMMs] from 8GB
FREE UPGRADE! 1TB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 640GB
1GB ATI Radeon HD 5450 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter]

i7 core is top of the line atm There are other graphics card options availiable, if you wanted the highest one, get the ATI Radeon HD 7000 series they offer for 90$ extra.

Just my opinion. My HP I purchased 2 years ago was "top" of the line from the website at the time and it's still going strong, plays FFXIV like butter (except for obvious server lag) and it's only a quad core 4GB memory system.

EDIT: Found this also, only 599$ and quad core athlon, with 6GB memory and 620GB HDD. You can save yourself some bucks and go with this one and It will run just fine like my computer.

Anybody with a 5870 running the alpha test? I have an Eyefinity 6 (2GB card) otw and was just curious if the Alpha's performance on my 8800GTX is due to the fact that the game isn't optimized for retail, or will I see a slight performance increase by upgrading my card to the 5870 2GB

On my 8800GTX the framerate seems to fluctuate around 15-29 in the battlefield, depending on how many other models are on the screen

In town it hovers around 13-20, wondering if these numbers will be more near 29 on the 5870 or if there will be no difference

1500 will get you a great gaming PC and you can just have a local PC store put it together for you if you can't do it yourself.

I posted a 1300-1500 PC build somewhere in the page and I'm positive it'll run FFXIV well over recommended settings.

I'm no alpha tester (curse you SE!!!) but the 5870 is significantly better than the 8800GTX, so unless you're using ancient bottlenecking hardware you should notice a major change in fps.
