So I bought a ps3 2 months ago (luckily found a good deal on a used one via craigslist and it has been legit), and got f'ed on the delayed release. This is my first time trying to build a system myself, and after hours of googling stuff and browsing newegg.com this is what I came up with - the final price tag comes to $607. How do you think this system would hold up? Any input is much appreciated.

Edit: thanks for the info. Yeah the 310 type stuff is what confuses me. Back when I last used this stuff the graphics cards were numbered by thousands so the new ones just mess with me. That list is kick ass! Will save me much time.
Dont buy either of those, the dell is a total pos and the gateway is a rip off.

Stop by the Tech section, its quickly turning into "Best FFXIV PC in $100 increments".

5770's are the right direction though. They can max all graphics in Aion in the big PvP battles and fit in properly in the FF bench to run max settings too.

and you've already spent half of that..

Actually, I don't count the hard drive as I still have the old one and will run the benchmark with old one and the new one that way it's considered still old in a sense. The ATI 5770 only cost me 170.00$ though but yeah guess I've spent at least almost half that, I think the GPU is a must to upgrade really. I was just running benchmarks the last hour or two and it was only using 40-70% of my 3.0GHz CPU through the entire benchmark, 100% GPU which is a 64 bit 256MB DDR2 HD 2400 lol. We won't touch that one.

Thank you Krystl for the ATI 5770 information, been researching a lot of websites/forums for FFXIV/gaming in general for information about this card. It was basically the only card I could get without buying a new PSU for my prefab. Can't wait til tomorrow.

I was curious, that little bar graph in the benchmark; that basically tracks the GPU load? Doesn't seem to be CPU.

@Dakin: I think the only thing that you would really need to upgrade would be the graphics card if it does not work decently when the game is released. Otherwise I think you are good to go. Seems to be above 2k on both low and high settings in the benchmark thread. I think you need at least 1000-1200 to run 720p smoothly.

Why would I get a lower benchmark score in Win 7 64 bit vs Win XP?

You're always going to get a lower score in Vista/7 when compared to XP.

What about it? I'm not 64 bits expert but the 32 bits emulator on it is quite robust (if anything you're expecting performance loss, but that's not really the case)

So I'm better off with playing 14 on XP Sp3 than Windows 7 64 bit on my shitty computer?

If you don't have more than 4gb RAM and or need DX10 for some reason, then yeah, you're better off on XP.

If you don't plan on upgrading, might as well just stick with XP. But in the last month alone, 2 big security issues surfaced, and I don't think Microsoft has done anything about it yet. It really is a dead OS, and the whole performance of XP > Vista/7 is slowly starting to crumble. Not in terms of just purely performance, but the effects from DX10/11 are really starting to make a difference IMO.

Hrm. I have 4GB of RAM (3.25 getting read) and I'm still on XP. Perhaps time for me to upgrade to 7? Dunno.

64 bits XP is pretty shit as far as I can tell, if it worked really well I'd jump back to it within seconds, I never use DX10 and I hate the UI.

someone correct me if I'm wrong...!

but why you see 3.25GB is because on a 32bit os your video card takes up a part of the system overall memory for I/O mapping.

If you have a 64bit OS, I don't think? that happens and you actually get all 4GB of your ram.

also I hear Xp 64 is pretty crappy, if goin x64, i would go win7...

Hence me saying 'I should go 7" lol. I'm not sure about the whole video card thing, but I'd certainly like to have more than 3.25GB of RAM open to me. I OC'd for the first time (oh noes) to 3.2GHz on this X3 720 and so far so good.. so I figure more RAM as well.

May as well, if nothings really holding you back. Just had to show a friend 2 links on the recent security holes with XP to get her to upgrade to 7. XP is dead in the eyes of Microsoft, and only release patches for security related problems.

What security holes are there? and if going Windows 7, which version would you suggest?

Probably the one affecting Help&Support released by a Google Engineer(was all over the tech blogs kinda because he released the whole attack source), which should be fixed next tuesday according to Microsoft protocol for updates.

    Would a
AMD Phenom 9850 Quad core 2.50 ghz processor
    8.0 GB RAM
    GeForce 9600 GS 768mb card

run decent settings at least? I ran the benchmark and got horrible scores.
