In terms of CPU, is it worth getting the Phenom II X4 965 BE over the 955 BE? Seems to only be a difference of 20 GBP in price.

I have the 5850 and have loved it, but it may be worth checking out the GTX 460, released today. (Make sure you are looking for the version with 1gb memory). While it's about 10% under the performance of the 5850, it's also is only supposed to retail for $230. Cost/performance-wise, it looks like a very solid choice. Anandtech has a great review up today if you want to compare for yourself.

At the very least, it is hoped the release of the 460 may force the prices of other cards down a little. And of course, if you've got the money, no harm in going for the higher card -- that's what I did.

My friend got the 955. Just up the multiplier to 17, you get around 3.4Ghz.

Save whatever little money possible. A little bit here and there, you might end up with enough money to get a better HSF, etc.

My drive is partitioned. The C drive only has 7 gigs left, and not 5 gigs worth of shit I can get rid of since it's mostly system related. My free HDD, D, has like 50 gigs left in memory, but I don't even get the option to install there.

What can I do?

So last night I spent all night pouring over countless websites, countless benchmarks, countless reviews. And I finally researched enough to finally buckle down and invest into a gaming rig that should work really well for FFXIV. Honestly I am pretty god damn excited and I should be in bed! It's 4:36am right now. So here goes.

Memory: Mismatched (Will run at 533MHz until I upgrade it down the road, inexpensive upgrade later on)
(I believe my FSB on processor is 200MHz so 533MHz should be maxing out latency ie 400 MHZ DDR2, add dual channel and technically I should probably have 800MHz+ however ;; I will remedy that eventually)

So this is basically what I came up with and I am quite content with it and will be ordering it in about a couple of hours. Seems to be pretty close to the Phenom II x4 945/Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300. And not far behind the Phenom II x4 965 actually. Should have all the parts here in about 3-4 days from now. I'll benchmark it when I get it. Guess I'll use my old Pentium 4 for ye olde file server.

Also there's a chance if the 640 is the byproduct of a failed Deneb processor.... I can unlock the L3 Cache and make it into a Phenom II x4, guess we shall see when I get it.

What do you think? Good deal?

Rosewill arn't known for making good PSU's, I would really recommend getting a corsair (500~550W will probably be enough* as well, unless doing major OCing/planning on CF) or another known brand.

*Only using a decent PSU that can actually reach it's wattage.

This 450W or this 550W, they are a bit higher than what you have atm but a lot better. (450W is min req suggested by ati for a 5770)

EDIT:: This seems to be fairly good, not sure how up to date it is though.

Unfortunately I have heard good and bad things. It's a 50/50 toss up to whether it comes DoA, missing wires, etc. If I have to I'll just use the rated 375w from my Dell until I can RMA/replace it if it is faulty. I only had a 300.00 budget to work with and it's already ordered. Thanks for the advice though. I got the 5770 in my 375w Dell at the moment but doing research a week ago it's unofficially rated at about 450w-500w. But yeah thanks I will let you know by Friday how the system turns out, bad news etc.

And on a decent note, I hit 1100 in the FFXIV Benchmark on my old Dell Pentium 4. Also played a lot of my FPS games and had a stable 30 fps. I am sure my system is hindering it but no lag at all so I am quite content about that.

It might need some temporary space on C. Move some shit for a bit and see if it will install. Also people on the beta forum were talking about using a 2nd computer and sharing a folder from the original one and using that share on pc2 to install to. Or something.

You can move your documents folders (this is for Win7, you can do in it xp as well but I think it's slightly different tabs).

Right click My Documents, Properties, Location tab, change directory and click Apply.

This will move all the files to where ever you set it to and will make that the default location for My Documents related stuff (paths for saves etc will be updated as well afaik).

Intel seems to be winning the benchmark tests, and I read the i5 was a better processor, but is it $40 better? I could get a slightly better GPU or a little more ram instead, but it's hard to weigh the options when you know jack sh*t about computers. Any other processors under $200 dollars that would do the job better?

Just throwing it out there for you if you have a microcenter Near you or within like driving distance you can get i7 930's there for like 199.99 and its the x58 motherboard style might wanna be something you wanna look into its what i did instead going with an i5 :D .. my specs are just below :D

You're good for a complete upgrade, sorry. Athlon 3000+ is way too old/ not good enough and technically you could /try/ to run with the 8800 GT but you're better off with a complete upgrade.

Depends how many hundreds is "few", if you can afford 500-600 and save a few things like case/HDDs, should be doable.
